Car rental - for Tulum or Cozumel??

Ok gang - it's time for me to get "serious" about my trip research (yeah right, I have been reading this forum for almost a year now!). One month from today I will be there....woo hoo!!! (OK, I am just a bit excited, plus I had a few too many Coronas yesterday for my birthday!)

My research topic for today is Tulum and Cozumel. We plan to spend one day exploring each and there really seems to be a lot to do in both places.

I really don't want to be bothered with the hassle of a rental car, at least not for more than one day.

My question is, if I were to rent a car for one day, where would it be more useful? To drive from PDC to Tulum - to see the ruins, the south beaches, Tulum Pueblo, etc - or pick one up in Cozumel to spend the day doing an island circle and make stops as needed?

Thanks all, I am into saving money if I can, but I also want to maximize our time in Tulum and Cozumel, so if renting a car for one day works, then so be it!! I just didn't know how practical it would be as far as expense, parking, proximity between sights, etc.

Rent on Cozumel...

On the Riviera Maya, public transportation is too good and too cheap to waste it on a rental car.

On Cozumel, there is virtually no public transportation and a taxi will probably bleed you since there aren't tons of cheap alternatives other than a rental vehicle.

Do a search on google for Smart Car on Cozumel, then print out the internet coupon. Get a vw bug for the day. Cheap and fun!

Hey Islandgal,

I visited Tulum and just took a collectivo there and back with no problems at all. I'm planning on doing it his time as well. I haven't been to Coz but plan on doing that as well. From what I've read it seems a taxi is the way to go for there. Just bought snorking equipment yesterday and can't wait to use it.

Thanks for the info everyone! Other than the Smart company, anyone have any other trusted rental companies on Cozumel? How far is the Smart Rental place from where the ferry comes in from PDC?

Hey, Newfie Susan, did you end up booking the Chichen Itza tour for you and the girls on May 20? Hope to see you then! Got my Nerak Necklaces today too..so we're ready for the ****** that night too!!

I believe there's a map on their webpage. It's a pretty short walk. If I remember correctly, walk to the end of the plaza, take a right, then a left on the next street and it's up about a block.

Hi Islandgal,

Yes, we're booked for the tour. Can't wait. We'll have necklaces for the party. Can't wait for that either. Walking around the house in a mask and snorkel just don't cut it.

Ha Ha Ha - I hear you on that, Susan!!

I've taken to dancing around my kitchen listening to my "Just Relax Mexico" CD with a Corona in hand (ok,ok, one in EACH hand!)

It's just not working for me anymore....I think we need to get there, pronto!!
