Sam's Club or Grocery Store

I always hate making that trip to the grocery store on the first day in PDC. Can anyone tell me if Sam's Club has everything that the grocery store has. i.e., beer, hard liquor and deli stuff. I also heard you can buy real milk. Is that true? And finally, is it closer than the Chedreau (sp?).

You can get all of that stuff in mass quantities at Sam's Club. I didn't check to see if they had milk. Sam's Club is located not too much further south of Chedraui; it's a few minutes drive.

Sam's is a good place for beer, wine, and liquor. Not good for deli. It does have fresh milk, only in gallon sizes. Sam's is farther South on the highway than Chedraui. You have to have a membership card for Sam's.

Thanks for the info. I am so excited about finding real milk. Two weeks without it gets very hard. We have our card and will be staying at Xaman Ha Condos so bulk should be good. Thanks again for the quick replies.

Sam's Club

Even if you don't have a membership to Sam's Club, I don't because there are none where I live, you can get a day pass. You can contact them ahead of time and they will email one to you but I also believe they will issue one day passes at the door.

They will. They do. They have. By the way, Jamesblonde, the other milk you apparently have such an aversion to, the stuff widely available in tetra packs, is "real" milk, it's just been irradiated so as not to require refrigeration until opened.

I know, that is what we normally get. It's just that it is so much sweeter. I prefer the other.

It is not practical to shop only at Sam’s when you arrive, unless all you have on your list is beer wine and milk.

I stop at Sam’s get what I can from there, then go onto Chedraui to get most of everything else. For meat I stop at the HC Monterey on the south side of Calle 1 Sur. About ¼ mile east of Chedraui. There is also a good fruit and vegetable market on the north side of Calle 1 Sur. With these four stores to choose from, I can get everything I would need to eat and drink in one excursion.

If you are hungry you can eat at HC Monterey and they’ll even serve you a cold one.

Got Milk?

I am a three gallon a week milk drinker, so I was also really happy to read on this forum that Sams had milk. We went to Chedraui before we even went to our digs in Playacar. They didn't have milk (nor did I expect them to), and for a very limited Spanish speaker, it was quite a journey (I actually had a ball scoping out all the "mucho deliscioso" stuff on the packages).

The next day, we headed for Sams, our dairy withdrawal in full swing. No milk. Some kind of soy alternative that really didn't appeal (although I think it was promised to be "mucho deliscioso"). Like many things in Mexico, the supply chain is somewhat tenuous. Normally, I have learned to shrug my shoulders and mutter "manana", but this is milk we are talking about. We had to make do with beer and margaritas. I did sneak out one afternoon for a chocolate malt at Johnny Rockets, but that was it for the lactose of the week.

I wish you better luck than we had, and I guarantee you I will be at Sams again, looking for leche in October.

But Chedraui DOES have milk, just not the cold fresh milk in gallons we are used to in North America. As long as you get whole milk (entera) and get it as cold as possible, it tastes pretty good. I swear!

I agree with Michael on the shopping.

Chuckkay- Chedraui has milk, it's just ultra pasteurized and comes in a box. Sam's runs out of it alot, and FYI: the blue labeled domestic fresh milk they sometimes have does not compare to the imported Borden branded milk they also carry (when they have it.) I tried it last time as an experiment and will stick with the Borden. Yep, supply lines are certainly tenuous.

I have never understood why human adults would drink baby food for cows.
