Opinions on renting the disco for my reception at the IB Tucan

Ok here is the thing….It dawned on me today that we are paying 300.00 to rent the disco out for our reception dance but I have several single women attending and only one single male. This is not so such a huge issue, accept for the fact that we will be there for two hours and that is a long time to be standing around with no one (single women) to dance with etc. Give your thoughts on this. We could opt not to rent the disco and just go out in Playa later that evening but then we don't have a first dance ...I am just not sure.

Here are the numbers:

12 single adult women ranging in age from 21-50 yrs. of age
2 single adult man - 30 and over 50 yrs. of age
altogether 13 adult men and 26 adult women.

The other thing as far as guys…I am not sure that they would all dance with their own partners let alone ladies they don’t know…plus their mate might not appreciate them dancing with other women etc. even for the sake of keeping the party going….sooo I think I will be going with trying to find a place to party after the wedding.

So give thoughts please...thanks!

Totlpkg10,
Could you go to the disco for your dance but not have to rent it. That way there would be other IB guests in the disco as well as your wedding party.
I know when we were there they took requests so having them play specific songs for you shouldn't be a problem.

I am in your same situation. We decided the disco rental was a no go because there wouldn't be enough people into dancing and they would probably have just as much fun if not more at one of the resort bars. I'm hoping they will have a place set aside where we can do the cake cutting/speeches/special dances...I will ask Mariela and let you know if I hear anything helpful! I will email you this week also with photos she has sent me. Sorry I haven't done it yet-busy week.

If the wedding was early enough you could catch a shuttle to the party boat to isla mujeres. That would be fun. Then your out on the water and might have something like that (party boat) in PDC as well......

I second this. Save yourself a couple of bucks.
The more the merrier, I'd say, when you're having a party.
Drinks are inclusive anyway.
Another thing: after the regular entertainment has finished, the Starfriends (animation team) will go to the disco also and they get things really going, too!
All of them are party-animals and a wedding party is even an 'extra' to them. Plus they want YOU to have a great time!

At one point in my life I would have loved to be that one single guy.

$300??? SAVE IT!! I agree with Tony. With only 39 people, you're gonna feel somewhat lost in the disco by yourselves, especially if it's not a definite dancing crowd. Some of the animation team put on an impromptu break-dancing show at the disco last year while we were there, and it was a blast! Resort guests also joined in, and it was a LOT of fun! They would definitely be grabbing those single ladies in your group to dance, and I'm sure they'd be happy to play special songs for you if they know you just got married there. Ask the DJ to announce that it's your "official" first dance as man and wife (even if you've been dancing earlier), and although you might not be alone on the dance floor with only your friends and family around, you'll have a more unique memory than the usual bride/groom dance, and everyone else will be having a good time too.... more people-watching and opportunities to dance.

Good point from Parrothead. I'd say "take over" one of the lobby bars (either Tucan's or Quetzal's) or maybe around the bar at the rear of the Plaza where they have the shows. Then re-route your group to the disco around 11:30 or so and party hearty!!

The Impromtu break dancing that you saw last year won't be happening this year, my boyfriend one of them and the rest of his friends that are really into break dancing have all moved on to other hotels!!! But that doesn't mean that the starfriends won't keep you entertained.

Sorry to hear that! They really put on a GREAT show that night!! I took lotsa pics, but they just don't capture the "action". Hopefully they have a new Starfriends crew who have at least half the energy that crew had!!

The new starfriends group is really good unfortunately none of them can compare to the break dancing experience the old ones had. Most of the old ones that are no longer there have worked in the biggest night clubs in mexico city and have been dacing break dance for abotu 10 years roughly. I still know people at the Tucan, and have heard everything is still really good, just no break dancing, or of that callibur anyways.

Fortunately the current group (that is: last January) has a couple of great latin dancers.
They do a pretty darn good salsa, merengue and bachataa.
Which seems appropriate over there, right?

They're teaching how-to (the basics) of those dances during daytime, somewhere near the beach, if you're interested.

They are fun dances to do anyway, and great music IMO.
I learned them at home, so I already knew.

Hey Tiff -

I agree with Tony and Parrothead - skip the $300 cost and just take over the place. This was our intention for our wedding, but we were too tired! I know...we've become old farts! EEK!
The lobby bar would be a good spot to warm up after dinner...unless you want to hit the show. Then when the disco opens ~ 11ish, you can all truck on over. The star friends are great fun, and I find myself missing that one dance that they played at every bar - we heard it at Senor Frog's as well --- Tony, maybe you remeber --- it was the line dance style dance --- instructions included in the song....I wish I had a copy.
Does anyone know which song I mean?

At any rate, I'd avoid the extra venue/catering costs if possible...seems unnecessary in an all inclusive, and unless you want to take over and decorate in a specific manner, the surroundings and available food/drinks are more than adequate. Whatever you do, you'll have a great time!
