Hi Amy,
if they bring you to the pier at north playa (ie not the pier where the ferry from Cozumel is docking - don't know whether this is the 'Calica' you were talking about) it's easier to walk. Just go to the right side, it's not really far.
You will see the palapas there and just get a free one (if available) and chairs and the guys will come to you to get the money. You can order food and drinks all day and it gets paid when it's served.
