October

you're still in the off season in October, so you should be ok as far as the crowds go. I would think that as long as the rooms are available, you should be able to upgrade without a problem. the Porto Real is a nice hotel & the location is great. the food's ok...not the best, but not THAT bad. & you can always have dinner in town. the ceviche that we got for lunch (from the pool bar menu) is pretty good.

I stayed at Porto Real, 1st week of December last year. I paid low season rates and took a free upgrade to a partial ocean view room in the North Wing. They called it Partial OV but I saw 3/4 ocean out of my sliding glass doors. It was very quiet and the beach was just a few steps across the hall.

Your room key acts as a switch turning on power for AC and room lights. Only the refrigerator and the entrance light will stay on once you remove the key. Some couples take turns leaving one key in the room switch. But, when the maids come into a room, management has instructed them to remove the key and leave it on the table.

The AC is very efficient. It doesn't take long to cool the room down, so it probably is a better idea to keep the room key with you.
