Very Young Children OK?
We are planning a trip to Playa del Carmen in January and are a bit concerned about the water affecting our young children, who will be 9 months and 2 1/2 then. What are your experiences and suggestions for keeping them well?
Also, related, do the grocery stores there carry pampers, gerber food, and other baby items that we usually find in the states? I'd like to not have to pack all that stuff. Again any suggestions about baby travel in Mexico will be appreciated! ![]() Stacy |

baby travel
I've been traveling to this part of Mexico for almost 25 years(gee, I guess I'm showing my age). In my experiences it might be best to pack anything and everything you can. The best example is someone recently had to pay $9 for a can of OFF. The markets although clean and stocked, don't stock the same brands that you are used to(as far as I've seen). Maybe someone else has experienced somthing different. If yall are staying at an all inclusive there is a good mix of food that kids love. In fact I know of several cases where they custom prepared things for the kiddos. Good luck and have fun.....

If you ever get into that situation looking for OFF try the brand that is easy to find in the stores there. It is called Autan and works great. I used it growing up in Europe and you need it for the Skeeters in Summer in Italy. Works great!!! I always seem to find many familiar German products there as well as many American Products. It's not so bad trying a different brand sometimes and there are products from other countries that are just as good as American Brands. Keep that in mind and you will find everything you need. We don't know anything about baby stuff so!

I've been to Playa when my youngest was as little as 20 months (I've got 4 total). We really had no problems at all. You get bottled water everywhere. I would really recommend packing all your diapers, etc. The little toiletries that you take for granted are cheap things can be VERY expensive in PDC. I forgot to bring Neosporin on my last trip, and ended up paying $14 US for a tube of Neosporin (even the Mexican equivalent). Things like suntan lotion, nail polish remover, etc. can be very expensive.
I would only guess that the baby supplies you need could be the same way. I would definitely recommend bringing an extra suitcase and bringing what you need. You will have a great time and so will your kids! PDC is really very kid friendly. When I took the kids that time (when they were the youngest), we stayed at the Continental Plaza. The thing that was great about that hotel for kids, is that they have a HUGE kid pool. It's about 1 to 1 1/2 feet deep and is a very large sized swimming pool. My youngest two had a blast in it, while my older two played in the attached deeper pools. It really was a great situation. Becky |
