We've been all over Mexico, but PDC is still my favorite overall. If you are visiting the first time to the west coast I would first visit Puerto Vallarta, which has more old Mexico character. For a general, have lot's-to-do vacation I would go to Mazatlan. See a bull fight, professional baseball game, etc. If you want to be in a Cancun like place, visit Cabo - it didn't used to be that way, but it's very expensive and overloaded with many tourists.
I agree, PV is excellent for a fist time trip to Mexico (and you can go to a bullfight there too!).

I just wanted to put in a good word (like I always do ) for Zihuantanejo/Ixtapa.....it is a gorgeous area, always hot and sunny (quite far south) and you have two resorts in one- Zihua is more of a 'real' Mexican city where Ixtapa is solely a resort area with nice hotels- both are on bays. There is also surfing in the area, and great fishing too.

The water is a lot better than Mazatlan or Puerto Vallarta, cleaner and clearer- and warmer!- we even found some great snorkeling- although it doesn't compare to Playa. And the views of the sunsets and with the mountains behind- Paradise.

Huatulco is supposed to be beautiful too!

We own a timeshare at the Pueblo Bonito in Cabo San Lucas but have traded over to the one in Mazatlan before. It was very nice. Mazatlan is very different than PDC. It's much less expensive, but more spread out. Snorkeling is not as good but that can be said for any resort town on the pacific side of Mexico.

We'd go back to Mazatlan more often if there were more non-stop flights there out of Dallas. It can be a VERY inexpensive vacation there.

We like the QRoo area better though. We usually split our time between QRoo & Cabo. Cabo has the best weather of anywhere I've ever been. No humidity and 35o days/year of sunshine.

All you do is take the Ferry...Very cool place. The village waterfall is great. It's inland a couple of miles but rent the horses to get to it. We have been twice...Once in 86 for a month and the last in 94. It like everything else has gotten bigger. But we saw grey whales and Manta Rays the size of VW's. Wild Parrots and hummingbirds that would buzz around you while you showered to get water. We are thinking about going there again soon.

Well, you bring up a good point and I admit, I've never been there BUT, I hear that Zihuantanejo/Ixtapa beaches are the closest you can get to the Carribean beaches in that the sand is white and soft! Zihuantanejo is definitely on my "to go" list after Costa Rica next year.

Maybe we will see you there! We are going for two weeks winter of 2007...man, too far away. Hoping to go to Costa Rica or Cuba next year too!

I know I posted this pic before but here is one beach in Zihua bay that has the look of a Caribbean beach. (Las Gatas beach).

Rissak,

That looks beautiful. We have looked at other places several times, Costa Rica, Belize and Routan. But for some reason we give it up and go to our favorite place.

I'd make an effort to go to other places from time to time. It makes going back to QRoo even better when you haven't been there for a couple of years. There are SO MANY cool places to visit on this earth!!!

Puerto Escondido

I'm headed to Puerto Escondido in June, never been there before. Would appreciate any comments from anyone who has traveled there.

We took a water taxi to Yelapa for a day while in Puerto Vallarta a few years ago. It was very cool. When we hiked up to the waterfall with our young guide Pablo (kicking a can the whole way) it was barely dripping, though. Oh well, it was still a great experience.
We had a dope of a boat captain though. He backed up to the beach while everyone else was going right up to shore with their bows facing the beach. He got so far and we were then motioned at to hop over the side in between waves. Unfortunately I took his exclamation of "no!" (not yet) as "go" and found myself over my head, my bag of stuff (camera, towel, etc.) and myself completely soaked. I walked up on to the beach looking like a drowned rat. I think Brian (wet only up to his thighs) TRIED not to laugh.

I remember the waves being pretty large that pounded the beach at times. That's to bad the water was low at the waterfall hope it has not run out. We stayed on the third mountain to the right If you are looking at the lagoon. Open air Palapa, beds on swings, those racoon monkey type animals running around all kind of birds everywhere...

I just visited Cuba in March. Since then things are much more expensive there because the CUC was revalued. It used to be a really good value for the vacation dollar. I would have gone back, but that's why I picked Costa Rica as the next destination. If you need more Cuba information PM me.

We only spent about 4 days in Puerto Escondido having driven from Cuernavaca to Oaxaca and then over the dreaded Sierra Madre to get to PE. Horrible trip. We were all motion sick, but I guess you're flying?

The water wasn't anything to scream about, but the area was nice in that it was very low key and sort of isolated. Anyway, that was 2005 so quien sabe? It might be bustling now. The seafood was exquisite and people very friendly.

I wouldn't mind going back, but I'll go through Acapulco next time.

My husband was married to his first wife there. Wayyy back in about 1990. He said it was very hot, good surfing (little dangerous for swimming but there are swimmable beaches) and very laid back. I am sure it has gotten more touristy but think it is still a fairly easygoing, lay in a hammock and smoke dope type of place.

Steve- sure I will ask you more if we do decide to go, I heard they are no longer accepting US dollars but didn't know it meant increased prices. Basically next year if we go anywhere it will be wherever we can get the cheapest trip, because we only have a week- and the cheapest vacation is which is usually PV from here- or Mazatlan. Haven't been there (PV) since 2000, so we could go there again too.

Sorry birdman! I think most people on here have Playa on the brain , no need to worry about losing our Paradise.
