A traitor Returns

Sorry guys I couldn't help myself, we just got back from 10 days in Mazatlan. I guess we feel the same way about it as many of you do about PDC. It'll always be the place we return to, regardless of where we've been or how much fun we have had somewhere else.

I wouldn't mind hearing about the Pacific side of Mexico, when you get a chance. We have some timeshare weeks to use up, and that area always seems to have availability. Appropriate for kids? Water activities, especially snorkeling? Online research resources?
Thanks!

I hope you had a good time. I agree with Ron. There are many places in Mexico to explore. I want to visit Oaxaca's beaches, especially Zipolite.

The El Cid properties are really nice. Our family owns a timeshare at the Marina El Cid, which is very nice, but the beach is better at the Castillo Beach resort and El Moro. A 5 minute pulmonia ride (shuttle) from the Marina resort will bring you to the beach resorts though. Mazatlan is definitely worth a trip. I've been there a couple of times. Beaches are great for swimming but the snorkeling is not what you are used to in Playa...there's lots of great sportsfishing there.

MWC, we stayed at the Pueblo Bonito, Mazatlan in 2004 and loved it. Its at the north end of the Golden Zone where it is quiet yet accessible to the action and several miles of good beachwalking. Junior Suite with kitchen. I believe they are an RCI property. We checked out all of the other properties on the beach when we were there and none seemd as nice. There are other nice properties north of the marina, however you would need a taxi or bus to get to shopping, eating, etc. All oceanfront, oceanview.

I do agree that there are many places in Mexico to explore. However, my wife and I took our teenage boys to Mazatlan in April and to us it didn't even compare to the Playa area. We got a great deal and that's why we went there. The water there just wasn't the same as the aqua blue Caribbean water. We we told that the snorkeling wasn't very good and we shouldn't waste our time. There were plenty of beach and water things to do there. We saw people doing the parasailing thing, jet skiing and being pulled on water tube rafts. The sand didn't compare to the nice soft white sand on the Mayan Riviera either. Don't get me wrong we had a good time there, but it just wasn't the same. We did have a good day bottom fishing. I think the fishing is better there than around Playa. It seemed that people there were more interested in sitting around the pools. We are more beach people and had a hard time getting beach lounge chairs as the place we went had very few. I did think things in Mazatlan were a little cheaper to purchase than in Playa. I didn't like the traffic in Mazatlan. I guess we like the fifth avenue pedestrian only walking better than cars and trucks flying by us. Lots of differences. We talked with people that just love Mazatlan and go every year and that's great, but for us we'll be going back to Playa again and again........

I agree, Mexico is a big & wonderfull country & we plan on seeing as much as we can in the next few years, we travel one week to a new location each year & 10-12 days to Mazatlan. We own a timeshare at Pueblo Bonito Mazatlan, IMHO it is one of the nicest propeties in Mazatlan, mainly because of the location, it has a great beach & walking distance to many shops & restraunts. The snorkeling in Maz. is fair at best, usually pretty murky water but you can usually find some good swimming & snorkeling at deer island. Busses pass by every few mins & can be ridden to anyplace in Maz. for 4-8 pesos If anyone is interested I will post more (with James & Annas permission of course, after all this is a PDC board)

I've been to both, Mazatlan and Playa, and I would say that Playa was far superior to Mazatlan. I found the beaches in Playa to be the most beautiful sandy soft beaches ever - Mazatlan beaches were more like my kids sandbox sand. I also noticed in Playa there were zero peddlers on the beach...never once the entire week we were there did a child approach us to sell chicklets and no adults with hats etc. I found this to be much more relaxing than having to say "no thanks" as often as we did in Mazatlan. 5th Ave is awesome and I think any city would have a hard time comparing to this great attraction... I also found the people, locals as well as tourest, to be much better behaved - this could be timing as well.

With that said...I'm not sure you good go wrong at either location - Mexico is warm, sunny, on the ocean, less expensive and well as far as I'm concerned all of those things appeal to those of us from a colder climate.

Glad you enjoyed your trip birdman!

I made the mistake of going deep sea fishing out of the old marina. Spend the extra money if you choose to fish and book out of the new marina next to the PB. The old marina is fogged in often until noon and the harbormaster will not allow boats out, therefore your full day fishing trip becomes a half day. It also takes over an hour to get to the fishing grounds unlike PA where you are fishing as soon as you leave the marina.

We like Playa and Puerto Vallarta and split our time between both. Each are totally different geographically which makes them unique. PV doesnt have the type of beaches and ocean but has a better night life in my opinion. Playa has more things to do during the day such as snorkeling, ruins, cozumel, etc.

I agree with Birdman, Pueblo Bonito is one of the nicest properties in Mexico. We owned a time share there and now at the new PB Emerald Bay; both in Mazatlan.

We've been all over Mexico, but PDC is still my favorite overall. If you are visiting the first time to the west coast I would first visit Puero Vallarta, which has more old Mexico character. For a general, have lot's-to-do vacation I would go to Mazatlan. See a bull fight, professional baseball game, etc. If you want to be in a Cancun like place, visit Cabo - it didn't used to be that way, but it's very expensive and overloaded with many tourists.
