I'm so sorry that you and the kids have had to go through that! My parents have been living in Tanzania since last December and my mother contracted malaria last month. She's malaria free now after a strong course of antibiotics, but it really knocks you on your butt and the fatigue is debilitating. Our friend has also had Dengue fever, and she contracted it while sailing on the Indian Ocean on their catamaran. She's in her late 50's and she lost so much weight and just couldn't shake it. (They were nowhere near good medical help.) So, we understand how you feel and hope you're feeling much better soon!
We'll see you in Playa soon - do you need me to bring you something? Would be happy to help out! Feel free to make a request... |

Hope you and yours are feeling better soon, Michele. Been there, done that, and it's definitely miserable, but it will run its course. Could have been worse, M'dear. You might have had a run in with one of these guys. This is a life-size representation, and about a medium-large, for our part of the world. It's the provincial bird, y'know.

Hey Michele, that's bad news. Sorry to hear you guys all got this.
We were living in La Concha, (playacar phase dos) and we were continuously bombarded with mosquitos if we left the screens open. I got sick and first we thought it was Dengue, later found out it was a combination of ingesting the water and my RA flaring up...good thing (well, still not really ). That was part of the reason why we had to leave.....When I was in Chedraui to purchase RAID for the little ants that were driving me mad in our condo, I saw that they had these plug-in nightlight-type things that gave off deet in your house and supposedly kept the skeeters away. I never tried them but the concept seemed good. I know Chedraui is hit and miss with some things whether they will have it or not, but you may want to check it out. Hope you all feel better soon! |

I'll definitely look for those plug ins today at Chedraui. Thanks Leesa! I hope everything is going well with Jorden. I'm also going to spray all the walls and ceilings.
I am feeling much better today, nearly 100%, so I'm off to venture back into civilization. |

Well it's better to be scared (will still come of course), so that I'd be more inclined to take precautions. Any tips? Was wondering if there are any shots? I used those plug-in thingies in Cuernavaca and I think Mexican mosquitoes are way to macho for them. They still came and bit the crap out of us! Had to use the little coils but that still didn't scare them. Maybe Jesus can explain this

Saw the plug in thingies at Chedraui today but went for the conventional Raid spray. The plug in cartridges only last 8 hours and I'm not fastidious enough to change them that often. I also have to be cautious of all those plug in things because I have two toddlers at home...and well, you know. I'm going to coat the upper walls and ceilings with the spray and see if that helps. The little coils work well for us around the pool at night. I have also been eyeing some nice citronella buckets at Sam's!

You could start using Citronella as cologne
I bought the citronella oil in the Caribbean one year and that sure took care of those mosquitoes. My husband said the scent was growing on him. However, I noticed he never made a pass at me while I had it on there

Hey Michele-
I saw a new citronella product at Wal Mart tonight. It's a patch. You squeeze it a bit to activate the citronella, and then stick it on you or your clothes or a chair or whatever. It might be just the thing you need around the house, as if it works, the protection would move around the house with you. If you don't see them there, I'd be happy to bring you a package in a couple of weeks and see if they work for you. I'll be arriving May 27th... I'll be in Paamul the majority of the time, but will definitely be in Playa a few times for eating/shopping.Let me know if you are interested. Becky |

bug repellent
I just made a note to buy some Skintastic bug repellent lotion because I left my bottle of it in our house in PdC. It has a small amount of deet, usually enough for my purposes. I like it better than sprays, etc. simply because it doesn't have a strong odor and it's easy to apply.
And FYI, deet concentrations vary by product and describe HOW LONG a repellent lasts, not how well it works. So if you're only going to be out for an hour or two, don't be subjecting yourself to that Deep Woods Off!!

Becky, thanks for the offer but the spraying seems to have kept them at bay at least for awhile. If I can keep to doing this once a week maybe the critters will stay away.....or at least die when they come in.
