You could do the drive in five days if you boot it, but you really need three days just for the Mexico portion of the trip.
A friend recently drove from Colorado in five days, but he drove over 12 hours a day.
No you don't need to go anywhere near Mx City, but we were stopping in Puebla, so that's why we did.
