dum question, but....

We are planing to go 1st time to PDC on new-year's for a couple of weeks just to relax and get started in diving.
I know they are dumb questions but:
- is it safe ?? we are from Europe though live in NY and love to walk around. Also we were thinking on renting a studio on calle 40 and wonder if is it too far from “downtown”
- how about tap water and fresh fruit and vegetable?? I’d never had any problem in Argentina or Brazil but I panic when I remember Moroccan toilets

Thank you

PS: this website is terrific: it makes you look forward the day to go

I have never felt unsafe in PDC or the mayan riviera. Though I have never felt unsafe in NYC either as I grew only an hour away & spent a lot of time there. I think everyone's comfort level is a little different based on what they are accustomed to. As a woman, I don't think I'd take a midnight stroll along the beach in PDC but I wouldn't do that at a lot of other places either. No matter where you are, I think it is wise to be aware of your surroundings & use good judgement.

As for Calle 40, I like to walk too, however, for me at least, this would be a little too far of a walk to do everyday. But again a lot of that depends on personal preference as we enjoy spending a lot of time in town & at the beach.

We always drink bottled water but brush our teeth with tap water & we've never had a problem. And we've never had a problem with fruits or vegetables.

As for toilets, I find that they vary a lot from place to place. Some places are fine & some are well not so great. Many do not have seats on them. Though I have noticed that every time we return to PDC the facilities seem to improve overall.

re: calle 40?

One needs to know exactly where by street geography of calles and aviendas intersecting to comment in detail, but I put calle 40 in Colosio, a hard scrabble part of town ... if I was staying on either calle 40 or avienda 40 (near hiway) I would take a cab home after nightfall ... for speed, safety and $2 ... k
