Thanks BK! It would be great to have a peep meet here some day!

Hey Jacko! Nice job!

The colours of the new site are really nice to my eyes.
But IMO there's too much variety in fonts and fontsizes, which makes it harder to determine where to look.
I think you should stick to one font/fontsize as much as possible and let the nice flash(?) side-menu, and different frames, attract their own attention, which they do already.
And there's no need to put in large icons in the side-menu either. It's slightly out of proportion as it is.
Maybe it would also be nicer to the eyes to let the slideshow pictures fade into a darker shade (like the nice background colour) instead of a brighter shade.

I'd change the rollover images on the menu from shifting the word to the right in the "over" state to something else (or no over state at all).

I sure hope that is not what my web guy has in mind...I am expecting drop down menu's to interior pages....all this input has been great and will help me drive to the next iteration! Thanks all!

Jacko, I like the new page better than your current one. Very nice place you have there. I bet the fall foliage is incredible!

My web guy says the shifting menu will look better once he puts the "drop down" menus in...here is the latest version based upon your input...let me know what you think...more on the way...Thanks all! http://www.hlinn.com/new/index1a.html

The new site looks much more elegant and reflects the country location far better than the original. But your logos, which are already dated (circa 1970), look even worse now against the superior site design.

A typical example of a bad typography is that you have a foot symbol instead of an apostrophe in the logo. Sadly, you can see it more and more these days as students either aren't told or don't care. Although they'll soon complain if a full point is used instead of a comma on their pay cheque!

I like both. Except I'm not a fan of links inside of description text. My eyes keep jumping to the links instead of reading the text. I would try to keep all links together and organized.

I prefer Arial over Times New Roman on web sites.

Thanks, Mindbender. I learned the keyboard way before "dumb" and "smart" apostrophes, so I never knew this. I had to research it after your comment. I still don't know if I will go to the trouble to produce the "smart" apostrophe, but I'm glad you brought it our attention.

Jacko,I think there your logo and background greens are clashing.

Mindbender, I never noticed the foot symbol vs. the apostrophe in Season's, just liked the overall look....I'll have to get my graphics guy to try it with the real apostrophe to see how it looks. You are just about right on with the dating of the Highland Lake Inn logo...working on a change now.......including the clashing lily pad green, MN Annie

MikeW, we'll give Arial a look to see how it looks!

Still thinking about making the border maroon line a little thicker and also seeing what it looks like with all the tab menu text being marron instead of white/green going down to maroon on the left hand side. We are also changing the lower left picture to something in the restaurant. Thanks for the input!

The webguy says text links are important for search engine...blending design with promotion...no need for the links to be underlined at any rate until after mouseover...next iteration change!

Believe me it's worth the trouble - you know it's wrong now. There's no grey area when it comes to good typo and another professional will recognise it when you present your work.

If I see inch marks, hyphens when it should be an en rule (alt-), widows, auto leading, non standard bleed, messy x and y co-ordinates in artwork, I don't use that person. If designer's don't educate and uphold standards who will?

Glad to help. Normally I'd go over the whole site with a fine toothed comb and charge a design consultancy fee!
