Arriving late at ASP, switch to earlier?

We will be going to ASP in July on a Tuesday for a week for our honeymoon. The cheapest flight we found doesn't get us into Cancun until 5pm, then through customs plus car ride, probably get to resort at 6:30 or 7pm. After debating I went online to find that we can get a flight arriving at CUN at 10am, into ASP by around 12pm, for $150 more for both of us. It's not to late to switch, but I don't know if its worth it. My biggest concern is that by arriving late, we won't get the room we want, as most guests will already be checked in. Does anyone have any advice on this stuff?

I would think most guests there checked in on the previous weekend, so you may not get the room you want anyway. Gettting to your room earlier will give you time to rest a little which translates to more party time that night. But then the $150 could be spent on fun in PDC as opposed to getting there 5 hrs. earlier. Hmmmm--Looks like six of one & half dozen of the other too me.

Getting in early certainly would be an advantage to enjoy more of the day...but when we stayed at the Riu Palace we checked in after 9:30 pm and got an incredibly great room - one of the best without having a corner jacuzzi suite - so I can't really speak to your concern about all the good rooms being given away as the day goes but I know it certainly would make sense to think so..

My call would be that if I could get in earlier I would try hard to make that happen...for us, it's worth it if its 150 total...if 150 each...I'm not so sure about that...

its also the hassle of going through and switching flights now, plus $150. I probably won't change over, just hope we get a decent room still. I've heard stories of ASP giving out not-so-great rooms anyways. But if worse comes to worse, I can switch the next morning I am sure. Thanks for the advice. Maybe we'll luck out like it was for you at the Riu after 9pm.

Hey Barn. We arrived at ASP around 6pm. We all had great rooms. We were pretty much right in the middle of the resort.

Hey bottoms up, are you going to post a trip reported. If not, just give me a quick report. Did you have a wonderful time or what? How was the food. How bad does it suck to be back in Oroville

Thanks for posting this question! We're going to ASP in October, and I was wondering the same thing. Even if we dont get an oceanview room, I'll be happy just to be there!

We had an awesome time but with 9 couples that is A LOT of personalities. Everyone got along fine, but next time - smaller group. The weather was perfect the entire week. Quick report: Monday - hung out by the pool trying many frosty beverages. Met a couple from Jersey and they were a blast. They got a bit drunk one night with a couple from Sydney and stole a golf cart. Had security after them. It was the funniest story when they told it. After that 2 of our party wanted to get 2 carts and have races through the labrynth (sp??). Fortunately, everytime they found an unmanned cart, the steering wheel was chained. Tuesday - scooter ride around Cozumel (we had 14 scooters - what a site). Beautiful day. Wednesday those that were certified went diving and those of us who weren't hung by the pool until our spa times. Full body massage, facial, pedicure & manicure. WONDERFUL. I actually could do without the pedicure & manicure but the spa treatment was really nice. Thursday was shopping in Playa which included a trip to the Tequilla Barrel. Someone said it was a great place to watch people and they weren't kidding. Could have sat there all day long. Bought 2 hammocks for 350 pesos each - my hubby was so pleased with himself. I bought a sink for our cabana bar out by our pool. It fit in his carryon so got home safely. Found the Harley Davidson store on our way back to meet our friends for the trip back to ASP. Had to buy more goodies - especially my new pink Harley ball cap. My sister will be so jealous! On Friday one other couple went with us to Xel-Ha. We had been before but this was their first trip to Mexico so had to do something touristy. Having been there in Dec 2003, we were very disappointed in the clairty (or lack there of) of the water. It was still a pretty float though. A little storm blew through in the afternoon so we made ourselves comfy under a palapa near the floating bridge and watched a turtle out in the inlet. Oh yea, there were frosty beverages involved there too! Saturday was our last pool day and I think I stayed until the sun went down. I just wasn't ready for the trip to be over. The food at ASP was ok - nothing fabulous, but nobody went hungry either. We tried every restaurant in the resort. The Oriental restaurant was Friday night - wouldn't do that again. Not impressed at all and 5 out of 6 of us had bad tummys after that. Our rooms were really nice. We were in the Frances Corona building facing the ocean. I really enjoyed waking up every morning, laying in the hammock with my book and watching the sunrise. The in room jacuzzi only got used a couple of times. Word of warning...DO NOT stand up when the jets are on. Those little suckers shoot a long ways! Knocked the candles off the end of the tub and washed the glass door at the same time!

It's good to be home, but only because I really missed the kids. I'm seriously thinking about renting a villa next time and taking the kids. Barn let me know if you have any questions. You're going to have a great time.

Thanks for the info. We don't really have any set-in-stone plans while we are there. I'm interested in xelha or xcaret, but I want the trip to last as long as possible, and I'm afraid that if we do to many side trips, the trip will fly by. I would rather spend the whole time by the lagoon or pool just relaxing. Glad that you had a good time

One thing about the rooms that I forgot. The beds are HARD. My joke of the week was "ya know how everything is made of cement down here? So is our bed"

It would be $300 to change those flights, not worth it for just a few more hours if'n you ask me...and like someone else said, that money might be better spent on other fun things!

Shammers is right...the few hours for 300.00 isn't really worth the $$...Save it as a starter fund for the next trip or buy yourself "sumpin' purty"...

and we really look forward to the hard beds in Playa...there's something to be said for a firmer-than-firm mattress on a slab of concrete...and headboards bolted onto the walls...

I can't say exactly what that something to be said is...but I'm sure you're following along...

Do they have mattress pads that we can request? anyone know? I'll save the $ for October 2006 when we return for a friends wedding. Havn't decided on a resort for that trip yet. We'll see how ASP is first. Our friends are doing there wedding at SERC but don't want the guests booked at the same place. What is it with hard beds at AI's? Maybe they don't make as much noise?
