We just returned from the Royal Porto Real on Sunday. The hotel is beautiful, on the beach with great access to town; just a short walk to 5th Ave. There is some ongoing construction to put up with (they were touching up paint and some hammer pounding going on). However, by July, the construction should be almost complete. Try to request a room in the south side of the hotel, as they are building another wing on the north side with heavy construction going on.

You'll have a great time there.

I don't know if these will help anyone or not. They were taken from the periphery of the property, April 10th, 2005.

Did not get over that way this time but someone said that there was still quite a bit unfinished on the back portion.

Just got back from there...very nice, but needs some help.
I think In July you will be OK. I will post a report tomorrow after I get some well needed sleep. The bartenders are great

Thank you TaylorfamilyTX I will look forward to your review how would you rate beach 1-10 & water 1-10. Is beach crowded
Just looked at some pics posted by Cufflinks and well not to impressed with beach, but they were taken in beginning of April and during alot of construction going on, but again hard to tell from pic.

I look forward to your reply/review Thanks!

Thank you for your pictures, beaches seems just ok, but again hard to tell from vantage point of pictures, is seaweed a problem there? Im getting a bit nervous, I must admit Rooms look awesome and proximity to 5th but I am real concerned about beach and water..should I consider Hotel change? Seen some beach pics of Barcelo looked like they have a fantastic beach but I no nothing about that resort at all! Thanks again for the pics really appreciate

beaches are great in this area. the resort opens onto the beach. town beach is on your right and mamitas beach is to your left. the resort has beach volley ball set up. lots of chairs reserved for those staying with them. other places on the beach require rentals for chairs and beds. the construction starts early (around 7). if the noise wakes you, then it offers you the opportunity to get out and start enjoying your day.

Well Im hoping for no or very little construction noise, I am a early riser so that will not be a problem for me but it may be for my 3 teens..I really just want it complete so all facilities are open and operational.
I just posted a few great pics on tripadvisor that I got from a recent visitor place looks awesome as well as beach, the pics are great, they should be up in a couple days sometimes it takes a day or 2 for tripadvisor to post them...
Looks complete from the pictures...ill cross my fingers for a finish by July 20th. Thanks...

The new construction does apear to be a third wing on the north side, and part of the Royal. It was in the brick and mortor phase when we were there, but the architecture does look the same. As I mentioned before, if you stay on the south side of the hotel I don't believe the new construction will be a issue. Nor is the construction in or around the pool or resturant areas. As far as the hotel it's self, it is BEAUTIFUL. There are 2 pools with plenty of lounge chairs (no need to claim your spot early). Great beach with more lounge chairs and palapa's for shade. Because we didn't do the AI, I can't comment on the quality of the food, but I saw at least three resturants, and several bars. One swim/walk up bar at the pool, and two more in or near the lobby.

This was our 6th trip to Playa, and it never ceases to amaze me how it change each year. Just about anywhere you go within the city PDC your are going to encounter some construction.

You'll have a great time, and I highly recomend the hotel. If you are doing the AI be sure to still get out to 5th and try some of the excellent resturants and bars there.

Have Fun, you'll love it

To me, it looks like the seaweed you see in the photo is an "untended" part of the beach North of where the Royal Porto Real puts out their chairs and palapas. In fact, in the same photo farther south down the beach you can see the chairs and palapas. I don't think you'll find a big resort that won't bother to rake the sand, but I guess I could be wrong.
