Speaking of signs, yesterday they put up one to announce WALMART SUPERCENTER - COMING SOON (of course, the second part being in Spanish). Steve was right, as usual.

But on to more important things, when are you and Mindbender coming by for drinks, again? Now that life is more or less back to normal around here...

I think I saw this when I was down last week. Is it right across the street from San Francisco? It looked like a busy site, big enough for a Wal-Mart.

Poor San Francisco will not be around too much longer.

If any change in Playa makes me sad...it's this! I would hate to see San Francisco gone because of Evil Walmart, but if it's less expensive and saves the locals some $$$ and possibly creates more jobs...then I will not complain!

San Francisco, IMHO, is as evil as WalMart. They take business from the community, but do nothing to improve. This is true throughout the Yucatan. Their stores are usually dirty, their selection spotty, and their service is horrible.

I agree that Playa is in for some big changes, and not all of them are for the better. However, if San Francisco closes, they have no one but themselves to blame. When you are the only game in town, the status quo is OK. When faced with competition, however, people will remember how things were when there were no options.

Thanks! I did not know this about San Francisco...I was under the impression they were a locally owned and operated grocery store. I'd prefer to shop at stores that help the local community rather than hurt.

Steve

I dropped in (unplanned Mexican style) while I was passing the other day and you weren't there.

Are you around at the weekend?

Why don't we hook up at the Peep Meet on Monday, and then plan something else.

I am not a particular fan of Wal-Mart but they do help & serve the communities they are in,& surrounding ones too. If your group[church,boy/girl scouts, elders, sports team, needs stuff, you'll often get it free. My grand-son recently took part in a benefit fashion show, and Wal-Mart donated the clothes he wore, & had a sales associate in charge of facilitating the choosing of the clothes etc. They are really good neighbors, and sell good stuff cheap.I could barely afford my prescription inhalent before I started going to Sam's Club. Saves me about 60$ every 2 months on one,and the other is 9$ at Sam's was 38$ at C.V.S.I am sure that having a Wal-mart will not degrade the quality of life in Playa as much as some folks seem to think.

Tres Nietos seems to have been the first victim of WalMart. A "Se Vende" sign is now up and the doors closed tight.

Since Walmart's not even open yet (IS IT???), how can they have put anyone out of business already?
