(mostly) 8th street update
For those of us trying to keep everything well stocked at Playa Maya news related to the coming appearance of Wal-Mart is always of interest, and indeed on today's walk in I noted that heavy machinery is finally at work grading and doing who knows what else in the lot between 8th and 10th streets, just between city hall and 30th Ave. Although others often mention the highway, this is the location I've always heard will be the site of the new WM. But whatever is going in there, there's activity.
(On a related note, there's also activity on the west side of the highway south of Juarez, across from Sam's, where signs say a new Soriana -- think Wal-Mart with a more exotic name -- will be put in.) On a more aesthetic note, haven't had the chance yet to try out the dining at El Zocalo, but I can certainly appreciate their decision to put what is apparently a replica (didn't investigate more carefully -- hoping it's not some kind of spoof) of Diego Rivera's famous mural A Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park (click there to see it) on that tremendously blank wall that they previously featured on the east side of their main room. Excellent taste! Steve |

I had heard that the store going in between 8th and 10th was the offshoot of WalMart (a cheaper version whose name I can't recall). From what I understand, the original plan was to have underground parking, but someone failed to check for centoes.
Soriana will be a welcome addition to the grocery scene here. Maybe they will even have nice veggies. |

Hadn't heard it was to be a Wal-Mart knock-off, or whatever, but yeah, that's a good one -- underground parking in an area riddled with cenotes!
That said, there are occasionally rumors about whether the presence of cenotes was or was not properly accounted for during the construction phase of certain buildings here and there. We did here, though! Got foundation/supports sunk much further than normal, I'm happy to say. Steve |

I know that Walmart has 2 types of stores in our area. A super store which takes up a huge amount of space and is usually located at a major intersection or highway..and.. the Neighborhood Markets, which take up about a block with parking. These stores are groceries with a smaller selection of food products (like 3 brands of tea instead of 8) and a pharmacy/cosmetics section. It would seem that a Neighborhood Market would be more appropiate for 8th.

So the Waltons have one on 307 and now one to come in PDC?
Good thing they don't have to worry about paying a minimum wage in Mexico or closing down stores due to potential unionization. They have a couple of lawsuits pending here in the USA. |

I'm not some kind of defender of Sam's/Wal-Mart, but I haven't heard a lot in the way of local protest about Sam's. Indeed I believe they're considered to be important as a new employer of locals and I know they did agree to buy something like 6 new squad cars for the police department as part of their negotiations with the city. FWIW.

We have 5 or 6 students studying in the school. Sam's pays their tuition, and they all seem to be very happy with their employer. I guess if someone believes a job to be worth $15 an hour, and they only made $5, they might be upset. Here, however, it is a decent wage.
