We are tying the knot on Isla Mujeres in August. Are you looking for a "legal" wedding recognizable at home or your own ceremony? Just the two of you or a whole entourage?

I think I'd go for Azteca for a wedding - it's smaller and quieter. Maya is much more playful and boisterous. I've not seen a wedding at either place but have stayed at both and if I were to get married, it would be at Azteca. Good luck! Post pictures!!! Have FUN!

We were just at Maya two (very long) weeks ago...

There were two weddings while we were there. One service was on the beach. The other was in a banquet room with the reception on the beach.

The things to consider would be: Is this a small group, large group, or just the two of you? Where are you staying? Do others in your group need reservations?
What services do they offer? How much do you want to pay?

When in doubt contact the resort to see what they offer...

We just returned from staying at the Viva Maya last night and saw 2 weddings there on the beach. Very beautiful setting for sure. No advice except to say congrats.

Did you ever get any advice about weddings at the Azteca? Looking to plan a wedding there for a friend this year!
