I was turned away at a few minutes before 6:00 PM last Monday Evening (Dec. 11.) It looked like there were no other customers eating at that time. Perhaps they were closing from lack of interest, and had starting turning away others before me? Or maybe it was JUST me?
Very good steak and baked potato, if that's your craving - but, in my opinion, there are lots of more "interesting" places to dine in Playa. BTW, I discovered that the meat (beef) sold at the new Mega Superstore is some of the best that I've tasted in several years. Not sure what their source is - Argentina? T-Bones the size of a plate! |

Please don't think that I'm Bad Mouthing the SuperCarne, as my large medium rare ribeye steak, baked potato, avacado, tortillas, and two Diet Cokes (all for 200 Pesos) were very good - and possibly the best-for-price in Playa. Having eaten twice at El Fogon during the prior week, I just wasn't in the mood for the Arracharra Platter. It seemed to be what most other people were enjoying, and normally, I would have ordered it (as steak about anywhere can be good, but usually the same.)
I certainly will on my next visit, along with a side of Chorizo. Just wish I could count on them staying open later in the evening. We all need to remember that reviews of, especially, restaurants are influenced by the tastes and mood of the reporter, and should be recognized as solely their opinion. That is why it is nice to have confirming reports. To judge HC by just one patron's steak, would be like condeming Manne's Biergarten when ordering anything OTHER than his fantastic roast pork on a Friday Night! Even if you HAD tried the arracharra platter and did not like it, your review and opinion would still be more than welcome! My only point was that I was hoping you would give the place another try and try the arracharra platter as that *is* what the place is known for... Going to HC and posting a review about their grilled ribeye steak, is, I think, somewhat like going to Nathan's famous hot dog stand on Coney Island in Brooklyn (which, as it turns out, I may get to eat at again this weekend!), and posting a review of their . . . hamburger. I've had the arracharra at both El Fogon and HC many times and, IMHO, there is just no comparison. FWIW, James (the pope of playa.info) thinks the arracharra at HC is just "okay" and "nothing special." Also FWIW, from what I can see, he's in the minority in his opinion, at least as to the members of this board who have eaten there. Of course, next time you eat there, if you try the arracharra, you may agree with his opinion. Thats okay too! We've got a "big meat tent" party here on playa.info...! |

Had it for lunch today. My wife and friends were non believers, and questioned my judgement several times on our adventouros walk to this fine establishment. They loved it, and said I'm the man, and will not be doubted again when it comes to food. I ate here in May, but it was a lot better today even though it was good then. I am a big fan of Chicago Jose, but I enjoyed this meal over the $27 rib eye I bought last night.
Our meal of choice for supper tonight is going to be Dr. Taco, and then mucho grande tequila shots the rest of the evening.

I've eaten there many times... I don't think I've ever seen any "good old boy" types working there! All the guys I've seen there (including the guy I thought was the manager) were latin. Most spoke some english, but seemed to be native spanish speakers...! Are we talking about the same place? |

StewartG, I am a bit cooky but this I am sure of ... I have a photo of him behind the glass making the red salsa. When my camera gets fixed (will take in tomorrow) I will post.
He said he's good friends with the owner, said he's the manager and was gonna probably move and start up another location (hence me remembering something about franchising, etc.) He really liked to talk lots. I just wanted to dig into my food but he liked the audience. Nice guy though. Mid 40's, average build, short-short hair. Forgot exactly where he's from but I can tell you this, he's whiter than I am. A real gringo. Somewhere midwest. HC de Monterrey. Promise same place. When you walk in... look to the table on the left. You will see on the wall " besos to Playa from Debbielasvegas" kathy.web is my witness.. her and Danny ate there the day after I was there. maybe she met the mystery gringo too... hmmm.. this is getting interesting. Maybe we should have a local do a drive by and check it out.
