HC is also a plain old regular butcher shop, no? I'll need to score a few choice steaks in a couple of weeks. I'm sure I could keep everyone within blocks entertained by pantomiming "I want raw meat to go so I can barbecue it myself," but I wonder if anyone has any Spanglish (or even real Spanish) advice to get the show started. My taste buds and those of my friends thank you in advance.

Yes, it is also a butcher shop, but I'm not sure how varied the selection is. One of the ex-pat local peeps who has bought meat there would probably be able to say for sure. I've only eaten there.

Do yourself a favor though, when you go to pick up your steak - be SURE to try their arracharra platter. Amazing stuff.

You might find a previous thread, titled "Menu Translation Questions" helpful (simply click on the underlined thread title in this post to peruse it). You'll find various meat translations provided in that thread as well as links to Spanish vocabulary quizzes... including one for "meat."

Well, that helped. Thanks! So maybe the following will get me in the neighborhood?

HC has great steaks, but they are pretty pricey. You'll get the same quality for less at Guidos Carne, just north of Calle 26 at Av 45.

You can also find much cheaper, great steaks at Mega and WalMart, although I've noticed some are less marbled than others, and the mega-marbled ones are far better.

We had steaks from both Mega and Sam's last night, to raves from our friends. They were equally tasty and tender (rib eyes), but Mega's were much thicker cut.

Thanks for the tips Page. Of course, going to Wal-Mart or Mega takes all the fun out of the transaction.

We get all out meat from H C , we have tried other places and they just don´t match up imho .
Guidos carne used to deal as purely a wholesaler unless they have changed .
X amount kilos de arrachera cruda will get it .

The best arrachera for grilling at home can be bought at Dac, on the corner of Constituientes and Avenida 30. It is marinated and packaged locally by a fellow named Mandi who, I am told, is somewhat of a futbol legend. It is absolutely delicious. It can be found in the back freezer on the right. If there isn't any in there, just ask. It really is great.

I hope Sctx sees this - he provides it for his sojourns south to his favorite beach hangout(s)....
(It still didn't get him the hammock of his choice however....)

1. A significant portion of their clients are American and Canadian. This is the butcher shop that foreigners stop off at on their way back into Playacar. I’ve always been able to use English (unless I’m with a person that obviously speaks Spanish).
2. They have a map of a cow next to the counter. If you need some obscure part of the animal you can point to it on the map.
3. As a lot of people buy precooked meals here, be sure to specify.

Took some friends and my inlaws this last trip. They were moaning and gasping during the entire meal. One of my friends had this to say:

"If someone ever went fishing for me, they could use this meat as bait!"

I picked up a porterhouse (advise from jez) along with the arrechara the other day and it was great. However, I think it will be hard for me to pass on the arrachara next time.

FYI - HC Super Carne also caters!!! Went to a great party at a friends house and they did the whole spread. Fabulous arrachera, grilled onions, guacamole, chips, refried beans, chicharones, nopale, warm tortillas, salsa roja, salse mexicana....it was wonderful. Grilled it right there at her house. 4 stars!!!
