AI Prices

Hi All, I just got off the phone with my travel agent and got a quote for a week to The Royal Hideaway( My wife and I went there in April to celebrate are 25th anniversery and would love to go back) and I couldn't believe how much the rate has increased. We paid $4600 for 7 nights and it's up to $6400. That's from Connecticut. Would anyone like to share how much they paid for their trips or is that in bad taste?

I know it's not the same resort, but for what's it's worth, we paid around $1,500 per person from Boston for the Iberostar Quetzal for this past May. (Booked it last October).

Except the Royal Hideaway is really in a class unto itself and is always considerably more expensive than any of the other AI hotels in Playacar. Are you comparing the same seasons of travel as well? That can also make a big difference. And of course, as Playa's popularity has increased... so have the prices. I've noticed many of the smaller hotels have also raised their rates. I was recently looking at villa rentals and was amazed that the prices during low season now are as high or higher than what we used to pay during high season just 4 years ago.

That's OK, we all have bad taste around here at one time or another!

But...can I ask when you are planning to go? I can check it for you to see if that's right. I know prices are going up for 2006, but that's a bit much! I did price a 7 night trip in February and it was about $600 less than that, and it was with an expensive charter flight too.

Prices

We laid down about $2100 for 6 nights (2 adults) at Catalonia Riviera Maya (AI) in PA for June '05. This was including air fare from Pensacola (about 1.5 hrs away) and trip insurance.
Sounded like a deal to me.. Besides we were there last year for about the same prices.
With a tropical storm in the Gulf already I'm glad I got the insurance (first time buyer)

Thanks everyone for the replies. Over the last 12 years my wife and I have been to the PDC area 4 times and have seen it's popularity grow along with the prices. The first trip was to Cancun and we took the kids. We love are kids but we both realized that it was much better to share a romantic week in Mexico with just the two of us. Our first trip to an AI was to Iberostar Tucan. The next one was to ASP and this past April we stayed at RH. Our experience at RH was head and shoulders above the rest but I guess you get what you pay for. I just couldn't believe how much the rate increased in one year. To answer your question Shammy the price quote I got was for April 21 to28 2006 leaving out of Hartford CT(BDL airport). By the way I loved your trip report you are so funny.

We recently booked Riu Palace (3rd time) for 2 weeks Nov/Dec which was same time as last year and price went up less than C$150. Sunquest's (only tour operator in Canada you can book a trip to most Rius thru) catalogue price increased C$200.

wow....is that 640.- or 64.- or realy 6400.- $'s

If we schould stay (but we do not ) for example in the AI Mayan resort (between PDC and Cancun) for 2 weeks, incl. flight, we must pay around $ 3000.- ...In the Royal Porto Real same time same AI we must pay around $ 2000.- (convert from € to $)

Now we pay for a lovely hotel with Breakfast for 2 weeks not even 1/3 incl flight etc...

PS: everything p.p.

JOBOB, have you seen pics of the new palace? It looks awesome. It's 10 minutes north of the current Palace. We'll be down in a few weeks, I'll be sure to take some snaps.

We just got back from a week - well, part of a week - at RH. We had payed for a week, but they were overbooked and we got bumped for the first 4 days. We used skyauction and paid just over $3K for the hotel only. Our airfare was $800 (Denver to Cancun-but that would of course vary depending on where you're coming from).
They did give us a free week to use in the next 2 years - excluding high season. At the time it happened I wasn't too happy about it, but now that I'm reading about the prices going up, maybe we were lucky? We're thinking by then we might have enough freq. flyer miles to get free air too.
Unless we go in September - which would make 3 trips to Mexico in 5 months, which sounds just a little too decadent

DH and I stayed at RH in Sept of 2003 for our honeymoon. Now, these rates are 2 years ago but we paid $1971 for both of us for 6 nights. Our flight was about $800 RT from Chicago Midway, total cost was about $2700 for 6 nights.

I booked the hotel from www.skyauction.com.

We met another couple from LA that paid $5400 for the same # of nights. I highly recommend sky auction.

Here is a link to a current auction for RH. It ends in 4 hours but when it ends, another one will start. They always have an acution going.

http://www.skyauction.com/action/offer/1003480

This auction is currently at $127 pp per night. There is a $32 tax pp per night charge too. So the cost per night for 2 is $318 x7 = $2226. I would hope that you could get air for less than $4174 (the difference between the quote you received).

Good Luck!
