Sometimes it is the mint that is used that makes some of the Mojitos taste strange. Maybe it is the kind of mint they are using? Personally, I like spearmint, but peppermint will work too (in an emergency)-although it is really a different taste--much stronger. Sometimes bartenders use applemint or some other type of mint and it just doesn't work.
Yup, I will second that (third that, fourth..whatever)..I had my first and best mojito at Babes...amazingly fresh and good!

I was so amazed by the giant fruit flavored frozen margaritas at Babe's, I didn't bother ordering anything else... I'll try the mojito when I arrive.

Not like Mojitos aren't good enough on there own, I learned a trick from a lodge in Big Sur, CA. Use the Captain Morgan's Parrot Bay Mango rum. It's makes them even better! Last time I stayed at the Palladium, the did not have the rum but I learned real quickly in Spanish "poquito jugo de mango, por favor". The bartenders thought I was nuts, until they tasted them!

Rum, spearmint leaves, fresh squeezed lime, club soda and sugar (or simple syrup). Just about one of the most refreshing drinks you can get in the tropics!!!! Originally a cuban specialty, I think...

Hahaha Americans can't pronounce it very well..Cause the "J" will be a problem. It can be difficult, as its sound, that of the German ch, is absent in English except for a few foreign words where it is sometimes retained, as in the final sound of loch or the initial sound of Channukah. The sound is sometimes described as a heavily aspirated "h," made by expelling air between the back of the tongue and the soft palate. If you can't pronounce it well, you'll be understood by using the "h" sound of "house," but it's worthwhile to work on the correct pronunciation. I use this pronouncing a lot cause I'm from Holland...

I also liked the ones at Babes, but I found that the ones at the cuban bar (La Bodeguita Medio ?) in the mall more like the ones that I had in Cuba. This drink did originate in Cuba and there is a bar in Havana that Hemingway frequented often which specializes in them. I didn't get to have one there but my first mojito (and it is Mo-hee-to) was in Cuba and I was hooked from then on.

Yes those frozen margaritas (although I though they were dacquiris? no matter) are awesome! Almost too big though...the peach ones are amazing.

My vote goes to Babes, the one I had at Bourbon Street was a distant second.

They may have been dacquiries... Whatever they were, they were CHEAP and they were BIG! I have a picture posted in my user gallery (I think I put it up there) of a frozen drink that was served to me at babes for 35 pesos that was TWICE as big as the glass in which it was served!!! I had to drink half of it before it melted to avoid making a huge mess!!! (Can you say, "ice cream headache?")

Jodeci - Although I've never been to Cuba, the Mojitos at La Bodega Media were the best I've ever had. Of course, I haven't tried one at Babe's yet! (But I will in less than two weeks!!!) I also happened to really like both the music and the ropa vieja there as well! Pretty expensive though, as I've already opined...

I spoke to the bartender at La Bodeguita del Medio last year. He told me that they use peppermint in their Mojitos. Babes uses spearmint in theirs. I grew both this year at home and believe what he told me to be correct. I prefer Babes (spearment) myself but both are great. Cheaper too.
After three Mojitos at Babes one night, I was feeling really good.
