Babe's mojitos are a salad in a glass...they have more mint than they used to, but I like them that way.
When they started out 5 years ago, the ice was prepared in a hand-cranked ice crusher and the mint was smashed by hand in the bottom of a hand-blown glass with a wooden stick. Very slow, very labor intensive. It's more streamlined now: the ice is already crushed by machine, and the mint is pre-smashed also. Still my favorite drink in town. La D de M makes a wonderful classic mojito, but Babe's is in a class by itself. It's always like coming home to see Lily, Pilar, Goyo and the crew

Another vote for BABES.
When we were in Playa in Jan, my brother in law was all about the mojitos. We had at least one everywhere we went - even the awesome Cuban place with that fantastic band and incredible lead singer (what moves that woman has....). Anyhoo...BABES was the best mojito we had all week. Hands down. |

On our last trip, our favorite place to drink mojitos was El Pirata on the beach on the Costa Del Mar property. We drank them 'til they ran out of mint every time we were there.
El Pirata is one of our favorite places to hang out in the world...the rope swings at the bar with sand under our feet are wonderfully relaxing. Plus, we're big fans of old-school ska/reggae and dub music. One of the bartenders, José, remembered K from her previous visit to PDC three years earlier. I wonder if he's still there... I can't wait to get back there in less than 3 weeks!!! |

coconut mojito
I have to say I first became acquainted with the drink mojito while my husband, Gregg and I were enjoying dinner at High Cotton in Charleston, SC. In Feb. we stayed at the Fusion Hotel, and enjoyed their mojitos (I asked them to use coconut rum instead of plain rum -they were quite tasty, even my hubby was downing them). The best mojitos we had were at La Vida Buena in Akumal. Try them with coconut rum and Enjoy! Can't wait to go back down to Playa.

I have started using Ten Cane rum to make mojitos and it is perfect. It is an extremely smooth rum from Trinidad and Tobago that is made from the first pressing of sugar cane. It is actually smooth/sweet enough to drink straight, over ice with a twist of lime, but it makes awesome mojitos also.

The BEST one I had was at La Bodeguita del Medio, but I also had some there that didn't match the BEST one, so I guess it depends on who is working. Babe's is consistently delicious........and whoever mentioned the mojitos at La Tortuga is spot on! Their mojitos there are as good as ANYWHERE else.........Those are the only three places in Playa where I've had them that I would recommend.....I also recommend my own homemade......a little bit of sugar, 3 oz of lime juice, 8 leaves and a sprig........muddle.........4 seconds of Cruzan light rum, 2.5 seconds of simple syrup, 2 seconds of sparkling mineral water, and 3 drops of Angostura bitters........shake vigorously and serve!

There's relatively new place on 12th just inland from the ******. It sounds tacky, but it is called Mojito Queen. They occasionally have a sign out front for $3 mojitos, and they are not small drinks. It seems to be the perfect blend of mint and lime, and I am sure the right rum... they get my vote. Plus, you get to watch some great dancing, as the Cubans seem to always be putting on a show there.... it amazes me how they move around so much in such a small space without trampling each other. We gringos just were not blessed with the genes to dance like that.
