Free passes to Mamitas??.....what does that get you....we
went numerous times and drank at the bar...no fees for anything extra....isn't that why it's called a Beach Club... so you should be prepared to pay for services.....just a thaught |

At Mamita's you pay for umbrellas and chairs, then food etc. I am not suggesting otherwise. Some of the condo rentals in the area include tokens for the chairs, which are pre-paid by the condo owner. You can sit at the bar and just order of course. |

I am staying at La Tortuga in July and Mamitas Beach Club is included in the room rate. I was going to bring a small cooler with me but after reading this thread I will 86 that idea. I agree that you are keeping these beach clubs in business by buying THIER food and drinks.

You know, I really don't have a problem paying a $10 fee to bring a cooler to a club, or to pay $7 bucks for a couple of chairs and a palapa. In the grand scheme of things, its just not all that much. I guess I think of it is paying a "corkage fee" if I want to bring my own bottle of wine that has its own wine list.
I'm with Ginger in that I am a BIG fan of the food and drinks at the Playa Maya. It was great sitting their in their chairs and loungers at no charge and enjoying the food and drink and view, but... Speaking objectively, as of last week, anyway, there was no comparison between the beach at Mamitas and Playa Maya. Whether we like it or not, the quality of the beach is a commodity, and that commodity has a price ($7 bucks in the case of Mamitas). In any event, I agree with MWC in that I think its good to support a business like Mamitas so that we don't end up with the "Omni Royal Playa del Carmen" there in three years! |

Sometimes I feel like people watching....sometimes I don't.
So...if I'm not in the mood for Mamita's/El Tukan...it's NORTH-ward I go. Also - El Pirata is a great place to enjoy the sand/surf...but don't tell anyone, okay? |

Of course this whole thing can depend on the season and crowds, as well. There are peak periods during the holidays and high season when we actually don't offer beach loungers to non-guests even if they do want to eat/drink at our restaurant. That's because we just don't have unlimited space or an unlimited number of loungers, the hotel is full, most of our guests tend to stay on the beach for long periods then, and we feel an obligation to provide loungers and space to our paying hotel guests before providing them to others who are restaurant customers but not hotel guests. Our guests would understandably complain if they lost out because restaurant customers got loungers first. We do inform the public of that before they sit down to order. Granted this may not apply at a place that is not a hotel but is just focused on the beach restaurant/bar business exclusively... Steve Last edited by ryberg; 06-14-2005 at 09:16 AM.. |

Since we usually stay at El Tukan, passes to the Tukan Beach Club are included, which is nice...although I agree it is quite crowded and impersonal, you really cannot beat that stretch of beach.
We never noticed anyone bringing in coolers, we never- I would feel too guilty! Those waiter work their buns off, and the drinks are pretty reasonably priced. For a real treat, try a Bahama Mama from there, they are the best in town. We always brought in bottles of water in our bags though and they never batted an eye. We saved the cooler for days we weren't at the club- touring off to cenotes or Akumal or somewhere. |
