still haven't seen this mysterious "Red Light"...... seems that long haired hippies aren't hassled as much in Mexico as they are in the US........ maybe in September we'll get to see red

I don't wish to be a party pooper, but isn't kind of wrong to take things like sweet potatoes (fresh stuff) into Mexico? We're not supposed to bring things like that into States and I'm sure people break the rules, but aren't we sort of taking advantage of the more laid back type of response from the Mexicans? I'm just wondering.... I cannot see a US custom officer being so lenient. They're generally quite unfriendly and strict. |

Never had the red going in. But when David and I were leaving last month, they searched both of our suitcases - everything taken out and looked at. I had a book of souvenir matches in there from our first resort stay in Cozumel. He held it up and reprimanded me, "You're not allowed to pack this!!!" They never searched our carryons or my pocketbook. I had a Bic lighter in each. Go figure.

We got the green, they took one look at me and stopped my wife, and emptied her back pack. No big deal, but it was tough squeezing all her crap back into the bag. |

After many, many trips to Mexico, this last time was for sure our luckiest. When we checked in at O'Hare in Chicago, my husband was selected for a security check, which meant he and his bags had to go with an officer to be totally checked out. Then upon arriving in Cancun, I was sure that we would not get the red light because the person in front of us did. Wrong..he pushed the buttom, and got the RED. Of course, this time we had all kinds of stuff for the new Condo, including a Dish Net receiver and all the parts. They did ask for the receipt, which was with it. We told them that everything was gifts..and they let us through with no problems.
