Riu Palace vs El Dorado Seaside Suites `
We are trying to decide on a AI for a trip in Aug 2005 and would appricate any comparision info.
We stayed at Bahia Talum for our honeymoon four years ago and loved it, but are looking to try something new. I loved being able to just walkout to the beach and snorkel at the nearby reef. Do either of these resorts have a similar situation? From everything i have heard the Riu Palace is excellent, however, we are in our late 20's and i get the impression that the Riu may have a bit of an older crowd. Thanks. Chapman |

We saw ages from 20's to 70's at the Riu Palace...its all about the ambience anyway. Great place. You can go across the street to the Riu Tequila and hit the disco there...or you can pay $5 (incl. tip) and taxi it to PdC for a night out or two...
The EDSS is a nice place too from what folks here have said, and I'm sure you'd very much enjoy a stay there - but isn't the poshness of the Palace...it's quite a bit south of PdC too. |

..Er, ummm...I see - NO reef for snorkeling... Some great snorkeling to be had south of PdC...tours are available through this site. I'd recommend booking one! |

Stayed at EDSS in Feb. and loved it. We are in our late 30's. I think there were 4 other couples younger. Snorkling was pretty good. The beach is ok. Food was very good. The Mexican restaurant was our favorite. Our room was a beautful ocean front suite. Service was excellent. Have you checked out El Dorado Royale? It is a larger resort with several great restaurants and a wider range of ages. We loved both of these resorts. Good luck.

We stayed at EDSS in April and we are in our 20's. Most of the people there were older but everyone you meet is really nice. I guess it all depeds on ambience like cuffed said. The beach is more for snorkelers though. Not to much for swimming because the water is shallow and rocky which means the fish are always there. I do hear EDR is great and I'd like to try that out one day. Good luck and have a great time.

We are a young couple from Norway, 27 and 30, going to Riu Palace the first two weeks of august. Dont mind if the Palace have a rep of having older gests. We will have a blast anyway! And as others say; no problem going to disco at the other resorts aswell. Or into Playa for that matter. We stayed for 2 weeks in Playa last year, and would like to try the AI thing this year. My Dad used to always say "Don't shit where you eat." and I think that's a fitting sentiment. Party all you want, then come back to where it's nice, quiet, and clean. We'll be at the Riu in less than a month!!!! Can't wait. |

So...you can hit the disco at the Riu Tequila if you'd like. Usually its a pretty hopping place...and there are usually places set aside on the properties for a little late night booty shaking by DJ...this was the case at the Palace at the restaurant closest to the beach and beach bar.... And there were plenty of the younger crowd there...a goodly percentage European - and since the beach is pretty much shared by the Riu's (don't worry the beach area is vast) you'll see plenty of younger folks and it won't at all feel like you're out of place... Or... why not take a taxi into Playa Del Carmen ($5 incl. tip) and enjoy yourselves there at several of the bars and clubs a couple of nights.... |

Hey Cuffed, believe me, I intend to sample ALL the local flavors ... including the beach, PDC, and the other Riu properties. All I was saying that it's nice to have a clean and quiet place to come back to once the party is done ... when ever that may be ...

Wise choice...! Sounds like you have it pretty much worked out... We loved our stay at the Palace. And by "you" I was speaking more in general terms as to anyone who may read that post in the future.... Palace had the quietest rooms and hallways of any AI we've been in so far... |
