Took 5 years to get this - now it's sold. The dirt is good here (near the Rio Grande), but it sure gets hot.

As a couple of you may remember, our old house burned in November of '03. The new Chez Anderson is up and running, but we've got nada for front landscaping, save for a few nice trees. I know nothing about plants, so any advice would be appreciated.

Here is the front. You can see how barren it is.

Here are a couple of shots where we want to put shrubbery. I don't have gutters, so when it rains, there will be heavy flow from the roof, so they will need to be pretty sturdy. Is this possible?

The backyard is in good shape. We were very lucky and only lost a couple of trees.

Here are a couple of my favorites:
A mimosa

This poplar

is a volunteer from this one across the street (about 120 feet tall)

I planted this oak for Julie on our anniversary 6 years ago. I love its shape.

Julie is building a patio from rocks left over from the foundation of the burned house. She is going to surround it with trellises and have some lounges. It ought to be nice and she is proud of her work.

We probably will add some sort of border around this patio, too. We are not sure though. Any ideas?

Our town was populated around 1830, so there are a lot of nice old residential trees. I live on Maple Street and both sides were planted with its namesake. Unfortunately, they are all about 80 years old and are on their last legs, so to speak.

Great thread. It's a lot of fun seeing where other peeps drink their cool cocktails!

BTW, Chez Anderson is always open to (most of(not sure about Tommy, yet)) you guys. Bell Buckle is a very cool town for a visit.

Yes, after numerous bids and sketches and resketches and precise renderings in the backyard drawn in with flour (hey, it stays on top of the grass and won't hurt my doggies!), we finally said "okay" to one company. It was a huge decision and my stomach still hurts a little thinking about it. Thanks to all of you for your input and suggestions. Hopefully I'll be able to figure out how to do the picture-on-here thing and show you how it goes. Landscaping will be the next mountain to climb!!

James A What a GREAT yard. I love your porch that goes on forever. Beautiful trees. Have no suggestions as I'm a bit of black thumb myself, but good luck. I'm sure it will look even more gorgeous.

SunKneeMarie,

Thanks. When we were designing it, that was one of my inputs (I got two). I've always wanted a huge front porch so I could sit on a hot muggy summer day and watch a thunderstorm roll through.

Mmmm. I think I've got a mint julep (Southerner's answer to a mojito) in my very near future...
