taxi fares increase
This is not the most exciting news in the world, but it seems pretty slow over here lately, so why not. Official taxi rates have recently gone up. Here are some examples in pesos from the official rates sheet for PDC to various destinations, to give you an idea (arranged in ascending order):
PDC 14 (minimum within city) Playacar 46 Xcaret 93 Puerto Aventuras 139 Mayan Palace 180 Akumal 226 Puerto Morelos 255 Xel-ha 359 Cancun airport 388 Tulum 400 Cancun city 411 Cancun hotel zone 452 Steve |

Those are officially published rates, so a driver trying to charge you more is in violation of official, published regulations of the system he's working in, unless there are some extenuating circumstances. You could use the information to pressure the driver into playing things straight with you, in that case. I don't know if that's what you mean...

I have had only 2 taxi drivers quote me the correct price. One even quoted me 5.00 U.S to take me from 10th and 12 to Mamitas. I told him to get lost..no sense arguing with him. One charged me 3.00 from Mamitas to 5th and 8...he did not get a tip and I told him I knew he was overcharging me. The 2 guys that quoted me correctly got a 4.00 tip and I thanked them for being honest. It pays to know the rates.

We never had a problem with taxi drivers trying to overcharge- everyone was pretty consistent(30 pesos from anywhere downtown to Reef Coco Beach). I felt like it was a pretty fair rate.
The only time a driver wanted to negotiate a rate with us was when we were headed back from Yal-Ku. I had him drop us at the Colectivo pickup and he offered to drive us to PDC for $25; he was polite and fine with it when we said no thank you. That was about $10 less than we were quoted by a taxi driver in Playa, just still a lot more expensive than the collective. |

I'm in the "never had a problem" group. This may in part be because I used to get in, tell them where I was going, quote them the correct rate and then say "right?" But actually since I never had a problem I gave up doing even that. In general though I'd take up the rate question before you take off.

Here is my example I used to pay 15 pesos from Poblado de Iberostar in Playacar to Iberostar Tucan. One day my mom came to visit me at the poblado, and i walked her back to the taxi so she could go back to the hotel. I then asked the guy 15 pesos right? and he said no thats only for employees and mexicans, and she ended up paying 20 or 25 or something. On the otherside coming from Cancun to Playacar they usually ask about 50 dollars and then my boyfriend would say no thanks if its not raining they would bring it down to 30 or 35 if it was raining it was more like 40.
