That's what I do.

I try to be careful about using DEET or any chemical but sometimes you just need to if you don't want to get bit. When I worked landscaping I would occasionally smoke a fat, cheap, nasty cigar and that helped for the most part.

Nothing works better for keeping the "airspace" around your home clear than attracting bats and birds. Swifts especially loooooove mosquitos.
