Au Natural Skeeter Repellants
Got this email from a friend:
OK, mosquitoes... prepare to be repelled!!!!! 1.Use Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets..Best thing ever used in Louisiana..just wipe on & go...Great for Babies! 2.Bob, a fisherman, takes one vitamin B-1 tablet a day April through October . He said it works. He was right. Hasn't had a mosquito bite in 33 years. Try it. Everyone he has talked into trying it says it works on them. Vitamin B-1( Thiamine Hydrochloride 100 mg.) 3.If you eat bananas, the mosquitoes like you, - something about the banana oil as your body processes it. Stop eating bananas for the summer and the mosquitoes will be much less interested. 4.This is going to floor you, but one of the best insect repellents someone found (who is in the woods every day), is Vick's Vaporub. 5.Plant marigolds around the yard, the flowers give off a smell that bugs do not like, so plant some in that garden also to help ward off bugs without using insecticides. 6."Tough guy" Marines who spend a great deal of time "camping out" say that the very best mosquito repellant you can use is Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil mixed about half and half with alcohol. 7. One of the best natural insect repellants that I've discovered is made from the clear real vanilla. This is the pure Vanilla that is sold in Mexico. It works great for mosquitoes and ticks, don't know about other insects. |

We just heard that they found a dead mockingbird with the West Nile Virus in our small town--yesterday. West Nile Virus is transmitted by mosquito bites. It worries me that peeps/people will try to use something like a those ineffective methods to keep skeeters from bitin'. And someone may get sick. |

Skin So Soft (Avon) does work - I have used it before........but only the unscented version. It is still not as good as DEET, but I would use it if I had nothing else....
Also all the old sugarcane farmers swear by Vicks...but that would be kinda hard to rub all over your body..... |

One herbologist in a Mexican University has investigated a plant called "Chaparro Amargo" (short and bitter) and he says that you have to drink a tea made with this plant to avoid the mosquitoes, but is so bitter that nobody likes it, not even mosquitoes. I haven't tried but is supposed that farmers in some rural areas have it with good results.

The Purple Martin/Bat defense is particularly effective and if you carry bat/bird houses around everywhere with you and stay in the dark it works even better!
I believe that Deet works by merely masking the normal human aromas that allow mosquitoes to find you....it has been tested safe over and over again on humans when used as directed and is most effective in actually repelling mosquitos. I suppose rubbing anything on you that would mask what attracts mosquitos to you would work and each has their chemical issues (even "natural" repellents)...some just smell worse and are less effective. At least someone is actually testing Deet and its effects on humans..Many "natural" remedies have never been tested and it is important to remember that many "natural" plants can kill you rather quickly. |

![]() We live in a rural area that has lots of mosquitos and woodticks. We only use repellent as needed. For our household we use only a can or so yearly. I don't like using DEET, but sometimes you just need too
