Dear Canadians
Okay a little history. We have some great friends who originally were from Canada, lived in Colorado for 7 yrs, on work visas. Last year he lost his job and they had to move back to Toronto. We miss them terribly and want to go back this summer.
Now... are the bugs and no see ums as bad as they say or are they pulling a little Canadian humour and joking. Will we need to cover up like bee-keepers or will a little DEET do the trick??? Thanks in advance. |

I am not from the Ontario area, but here in the prairies, a little ( or a lot) of DEET should do the trick. I think the advantages of visiting old friends far outweigh a few pesky bugs..........Go for it!!!

Anytime I have ever been in TO, I have not had one bug bother me. I think if you plan to stay in the city you will be just fine. Travelling to cottage county may be a different story.
Now if you were travelling to Winnipeg, then I would advise you to buy full body protection in the form of netting.

Now now Jodi, them's fighten words!!! Seriously though, this year we have so much standing water and it is supposed to heat up this week..........so watch out!!!
Maybe the thousands of dragonflys that the new "bug guy" has released as part of his "natural" mosquito control methods will work............We can only hope!!! |

I don't know about TO but here in Saskatchewan the bugs are unbearable this summer! We have been getting a ton of rain and now it is HOT....a friend of mine went to go camping last weekend and couldn't even set his tent up, they were biting so bad...he gave up and came home.
THAT is unusual though...but I would take some of the 95% Deep Woods OFF (AKA 'the good stuff') with you if I were you, just in case...they likely spray in the urban areas, but you never know. |

Now, there's a little thing to research... Can dragonflys get fat? Are we about to have millions of fat dragonflys sitting around on anything that doesn't move, too lazy to chase another mosquito? On the other hand, a quart of malathion in a sprayer can go a long way... Winnipeg! You gotta love it! Especially if you live here...

Ontario is having an unusually hot and humid early summer and the mossies are ravenous, mainly because there are so many of them and so few of us.
Deet's definitely the way to go, but don't go overboard on the percentage. It is after all a poison and some people don't realize:Using 80% will give you protection for more TIME, not more MOSSIES! If you're going to be outside for a couple of hours at dusk, use a low percentage and it'll do the trick for the duration. Or just apply a low percentage a couple of times during the day, rather than using the full-strength stuff (e.g. Deep Woods Off), which can mess with your breathing and other systems. |
