Cool The Bartender "MADE" Me Do It!!!

While enjoying some Patron Reposado tequila at the West Wing Bar in the MGM Grand Las Vegas last weekend, the bartender suggested that I might *REALLY* like to sample the Don Julio Real that he had........

Don Julio Real at that bar went for $55 a shot. I guess that's in line when you consider that a bottle goes for $390 on up. I told the bartender that I'd sleep on it and be back the following night. He promised me that he'd give me a "Good Pour" if I went for it.

At $55 a shot, Don Julio Real WASN'T the most expensive tequila offered at the MGM Grand. Their restaurant, Diego, has one of a kind, last of the kind tequilas at up to $300 a pour!!! Just a little too rich for MY pocketbook!

4th of July came and I decided to go for it. As Zydeco Mike reminded me, we're NOT gamblers, so it wasn't out of line to enjoy a $55 shot when I wasn't dumping money into a slot machine.

The bartender kept his promise...a really nice pour....almost 2 shots...in a brandy glass...with a glass of very well made sangrita on the side. The Don Julio Real was EXQUISITE! SO Smooth with all sorts of aromas and flavors from the wood aging in the mix! One that really comes to mind is nutmeg with after tones of clove.....somehow that sound strange when describing a tequila.....

I nursed my glass for close to an hour...savoring the wonderful flavors and heady aromas.

Zydeco Mike told me that a bottle of Don Julio Real might be *JUST" the right present for me for my birthday.... :p

Sounds marvelous! Vanilla flavored tequila...who'd a thunk of that one! I drink Don Julio Anejo at home and tried some Patron Anejo side by side the other day..the Patron is more expensive....but not as good IMO.

Lucky Joanie!

Mike and I have made a couple of recent trips up to DC and rural eastern Maryland where he was born. Because of the (unjustified) price of flights from Tampa to Cancun, I got sort of depressed about coming to this site. That's going to change now that we will be able to fly direct to Cancun beginning November 2005! I also got VERY preoccupied with planning a trip to Hawaii next April.

I'd been hoping that we could make the Toobin Regatta, but we *need* to finish up some house stuff.....seems like construction has been going on FOREVER! Also, my boss has been unbelievably tolerant about me taking off constantly for trips to here, there, and everywhere! Mike and I will be passing through Playa twice in November during a "Zydeco" cruise.

I need to get out there and see if I can round up a bottle of Don Julio 1942! I'm willing to bet that it's VERY close to Real. My bottle of El Jimador seems to be somewhat BLAH after experiencing D. J. REAL during our Vegas trip!

If you guys ever make it over Tampa way, stop by for tequila sampling. I've decided to start a tequila "collection" for our Mexico room!

Yah, what's up with THAT, Joanie? We had thought about a visit to the Keys for a week, then flying out of Florida to Cancun, then back to Florida for return to home, but the price of the flight from Florida-Cun is more than from here to Cancun! Terrible.
