Mexican Mosquitoes
I've heard how bad the mosquitoes can be in Playa del Carmen during the Summer. We're traveling there our first time in August and a friend at work gave me this:
OK, mosquitoes... prepare to be repelled!!!!! Use Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets ... Best thing ever used in Louisiana ... just wipe on and go ... Great for Babies. Bob, a fisherman, takes one vitamin B-1 tablet a day April through October . He said it works. He was right. Hasn't had a mosquito bite in 33 years. Try it. Every one he has talked into trying it works on them. Vitamin B-1( Thiamine Hydrochloride 100 mg.) If you eat bananas, the mosquitoes like you, - something about the banana oil as your body processes it.Stop eating bananas for the summer and the mosquitoes will be much less interested. This is going to floor you, but one of the best insect repellents someone found (who is in the woods every day), is Vick's Vaporub. "Tough guy" Marines who spend a great deal of time "camping out" say that the very best mosquito repellant you can use is Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil mixed about half and half with alcohol. One of the best natural insect repellants that I've discovered is made from the clear real vanilla. This is the pure Vanilla that is sold in Mexico. It works great for mosquitoes and ticks, don't know about other insects. |

DEET is the only thing that works, and new studies show that it's not the huge danger that it's been puported to be. We use Cutter's Towelettes because they are so much easier to apply than the spray. The 'Family' variety has much less DEET than the 'Deep Woods' variety. You can find them at Walmart, Kmart, and Lowes.

I like Skintastic lotion because it has a low percentage of Deet, doesn't smell gross and is easy to apply. The only thing is, if you're going to be out for more than a couple of hours, you'll need to reapply, because the percentage of Deet is connected to how long it'll work, not how many mossies it'll keep off ya.
One thing I've noticed is, unlike yer Ontario mossies that'll suck blood out of your brain if they can reach it, the mossies here in Playa seem to stick to the ankles, and I haven't been bitten anywhere else. So I apply the Skintastic to my ankles and that seems to do the trick. I saw a large supply at the pharmacy counter at San Francisco yesterday, so it's available locally. |

rain?
Sounds more like a lot of rain from what I've seen. How is the weather and how is the water after all of the weather? It looks like there is another one (tropical storm) possibly coming your way. What do they do when there is threat of a hurricane? Board up? Send tourists packing? I've been in a couple and they are no fun. We are heading to playa next wednesday and are keeping a close watch on the weather channel.

Born and raised in south Louisiana and I will be there the 20-29 so everyone be sure to be there at that time.
They can smell and zero in on a Cajun out of a crowd of 100,000. So as long as I'm there everyone else should be safe.
