Welcome! Don't worry, I have never seen any sharks...only crocodiles.

That was only one time and I never actually saw it, only heard it was there.

We've frolicked from Punta Allen to the North Beaches In Playa and have never seen a shark...And we've given them every opportunity...

First of all welcome to the forum Rockinman39.
Never seen a shark in about 13 years in the Yucatan.
Some us may have but not I.
The only thing you need to worry about is falling coconuts. :

Yep, the nearest shark would be on 5th Street trying to sell you a timeshare.

And yes, be careful with Ryberg....

Shark week is filmed in such a way that the sharks are always attacking/eating. Kind of like watching a nature show on lions. They're always killing a zebra on TV, yet in reality they sleep 20-22 hours a day and eat every few days. However, watching lions sleep and sharks swim probably wouldn't bring in viewers.

I could get on my "sharks have been sensationalized" soap box, but I'll leave that for another day.

I returned from Playa on July 2 (my spouse will soon be posting a full report) so I can tell you I saw no sharks in the ocean while there. I did see a nice 6 foot crocodile, but that was in Coba and not in the Mar Caribe.

It has been over 25 years since I swam. Bathtubs make me nervous. I cannot breathe water so it makes no sense to me except for drinking.I am very skilled at sinking like a rock, near drowning, shouting "Sweet Mother of Mercy save me from this watery grave" and embarrasing myself and those about me, so I tend to avoid the water and that has been best for all.

Last year on our trip I went into the ocean for about 10 minutes on the last day.

This time I went in every day and swam. I swam under the water with my eyes open. I saw schools of small fish in the surf. I watched the waves pass over my head. The water was clear and warm. Not once was I nervous. I looked forward for a year for getting into the water again and now I will try it in other places more often.

So don't worry about it and enjoy yourself. The latest storm may have raised several Kraken from the briney depths but don't worry about them.

Ahhh.... this reply has nothing to do with sharks... but we stayed at the Playa Maya last November, and enjoyed it so much we're returning in February... it's a great place! Have fun!

I would just like to add that anyone from the southside of Chicago should be tough enough to not worry about a stinkin' shark!

Just joking of course.

No kidding he "saw" a crocodile in Coba! He wrestled it and pried its mouth open to feed it raw chicken, like some sort of Steve Irwin. Raul is a tough guy!!

The only shark in Playa that I know of is the plastic one that is hanging from the Beer Bucket's ceiling. Oh! then there is Sharky, one of the owners...does that count? So, you are staying at the Playa Maya....hmmm...you and your wife will have a blast, you lucky dog!!! Have Ernesto make you one of his famous piņa coladas. Also, order the fried calamari... it is to die for!

The most terrifying thing I've experienced under the water was in the beach near the Port Real, I was snorkeling my way in the depths of the sea... maybe 15 feet from the beach and there they were... about 5 calamaries probably as big as my hand... yu'd think that these little animals would run away when they see you, but NO! These fellas were just staring at me in a very hostile way, really, mean looks! Of course they were in a bunch so they felt brave... I on the other hand was completely alone while my boyfriend was struggling with the fins a few feet behind me. He never found out about my near death experience.
