I think it is best to browse the other posts on the subject of this restaurant. That will give you the widest cross section of opinions. In summary, while I have had good food in Alux. The primary draw is the ambiance, and some people would not risk the food or the service and stick with a cocktail at the bar.

2 restaurants with similar names

One is called Los Aluxes on 5th and calle 16. This one is on a rooftop in the trees and has pretty good food.

The cave restaurant has a very cool atmosphere, but it's on the expensive side and not as good of food. I say go for drinks and experinece the place and have dinner elsewhere.

Good point. I'm making an assumption.

Which one is it?

Yes, I have been there. It is really cool but the food was pricey and I would never recommend the place based on the food alone. There are so many wonderful places to eat in Playa I would eat first then go in for drinks and some nightlife. I would compare the food we had there to the basic dinner buffets at the All inclusives (edible but I've had better) I do have some pictures if you haven't seen the inside. Send me a pm and I will email you a few.

The Alux (Cave Restaurant)

We went Saturday night ( July 9th, 2005)to check the place out. Dinner was about $20 a plate a piece and was very average at best. It was a cool place to visit though. Not sure if my pictures will turn out okay yet.

I just had dinner at Los Aluxes on Sat July 9th (recommended from the mapchick map, thanks!) I dined alone and had a wonderful steak and lobster dinner with 2 drinks that cost about $31.00. The servers and ambiance were
terrific.

The Alux cave bar restaurant and dance place just got taken over by new owners, so I vote to give it a try. You will be amazed by the place if nothing else!

If I have time when I'm there, I'll try it for dinner... If the food is better, it should become a MUCH hotter place. If its still just average... Well... I don't mind "taking one for the team" occasionally! :p

I'm glad to hear that it has been taken over by new owners. I think the previous posters are actually being quite charitable to call the food average. The facility (underground cave) is awesome -- so if they get a decent chef in there it will really make it special.

This restaurant is VERY good! In terms of great food, ambience and locations, and the service as well. It is in a quieter area so is usually not overly busy.
Order the chicken with orange sauce (off the menu now but they will still make it for you!)

I heard the food was not great at the 'cave restaurant' (how doyou get to it, by the way?) but I would like to hear someone review it with the new owners.

I had a really really good meal at Alux ( the underground cave) a few years ago. Perfect food perfect service. I even have a picture of their chef. However that was not typical of what I have been hearing this last year.

Now they are under new management, I have an excuse to go back.
-thanks Jez.
