Cnn
Hey, that's MY beach! How bizarre to see a CNN reporter standing next to Blue Beach Hotel, where I've spent many totally eventful hours. The best thing, he appeared to be standing on dry land. We'll be down there in two weeks; it will be bittersweet I'm sure.

Ground zero is in Akumal
Just saw a very detailed map of the landfall of Emily's eyewall from the locogringo site.
The eyewall slammed into the Mayan Riviera from Akumal to Tankah. Akumal got hit the worst. Now I'm getting really scared. Can't bear to watch CNN and their "minor damage" assesment.

That sounds promising at least. Glad to hear people are starting to get in touch with friends and loved ones. Luckily I am at a spot at work today where I can hit the computer frequently to keep an eye on this thread. Some one on one of the stations said "no widespread structural damage". That sounds good.

*** edit *** image removed. we must respect Gary's content at LG. Anyway, the line is the same as the line that I drew on a similar map that I already posted. --james |

We really need to await a full report before we start rejoicing, having experienced several storms here in Florida, we know that the true toll will take several days to assess. Let's maintain our hope for the best, but most of the real damage will become apparent after daylight and after there have been surveys and inspections.
In our area there are a number of homes with "blue tarp roofs" almost one year after Francis and Jeanne. Areas like Ft Myers Beach and Pennsacola are still recovering, imagine the help an area like Playa and the Yucatan. Some one needs to start a thread for bona fide agencies that will deliver the help to the locals. |

Still haven't seen any real news from Playa, Cozumel and points south. I'm at work now, and our TV reception here is terrible.
Even though I have some real personal issues with my former brother-in-law, a native of Cozumel, I DO have concern for him and his family there. I was alarmed about the projected possible storm surge of up to 18 feet. Cozumel is basically as flat as a pancake, so the whole island could have been flooded. My sister who lived there died of natural causes several years ago. I'm glad she (and my mother) didn't have to go through Emily. I'm relieved to hear that first accounts from Playa are showing fairly minimal damage and no fatalities. |

Hola to all... Well it has passed. There is no power, but honestly the damage does note seem as bad as I expected. I have not been over to the beach yet. Several trees down at Solexico, but the palapas and buildings are ok, so I assume most things survived. Will update later. I hope everyone is safe...
Hasta pronto, Gerardo |
