Reef Coco Beach trip report Part Uno "The Beginning"
We started out on an early morning flight leaving DFW at 7am on Thursday July 7th. Of course, we tried to get there 3 hours early for an international flight. I tried to sleep but felt like a kid going to Six Flags for the first time !! TOTAL HOURS SLEPT...0
We arrived at the airport and after we checked in, heard from CNN about the bombings in England. I went outside to catch the infamous "last smoke" before boarding. While standing outside smoking, a local WBAP reporter came up to me and asked if I wanted to be on the radio. Being my shyself I said "sure." We talked about travelling abroad and if we were scared to travel. He probably thought we were heading that way because I was standing out in front of British Airways. I then informed him that the day I refuse to fly was the day when terrorists had won. Ain't gonna happen.... We flew Mexicana (First class) on the way down. I happen not to drink at all in the US but decided what the heck for this trip. We should have been kicked off the flight, we constantly were hitting the stewardess light button for more OJ & Vodka (big mistake). Now I realize why I don't drink. Our plane arrived safely in Mx & we breazed through customs with our normal green PASSE light. Met our Funjet rep & were headed toward the right van towards Playa. Again, no beer on the van so I went and stocked up on some more cervesa for the ride down (you can almost picture me now). We arrive at the Reef Coco Beach @ noonish, of course no room available til 3pm. We had our suits on underneath our shorts & made a quick dash to the BAR for more drinks & then off to the beach to cool off. I was not impressed with all the boats parked there but that was okay cuz I knew that going into this trip.I promise later to try & evaluate the resort with more info. I then proceeded to TRY & play beach volleyball where I fell face first into the afternoon sand. Those (2) six year old girls were pretty tough and probably played for some Olympic team (so it seemed). The whole resort was laughing and with good reason. After a 2 hour nap (sounds better) I woke up to meeting my wifes brother & his girlfriend who just got there. Cannot remember much after that on Day 1. Total hours slept ?? Day 2- We head down to the beach where we strolled down pass the webcam to the new dock & Porto Real resorts. Damn, that new Gran PR resort looks really nice !! We also passed a very liberal looking place that had wood & white sheets and beds (started with a "M") I invited my wife for a quickie on the bed who then slapped me (okay, I made that part up but sounded good). Spent the rest of the day on boogie boards & my $1.99 Walmart float. Tried to stay sober much of the day beacause we were heading into Playa for the ****** peep-meet. I spent most of my time searching for Neraks BEADS that people were suppose to be wearing. Hacked off the wife who thought I was avoiding her by spending all night searching.I did meet the (2) Trish's (hello, very nice to meet you) who seemed to be rather nice. Did a little dancing & drinking and watched the flame dancers that was really cool. Loaded up on some fine cigars and headed back to the resort. Stayed up late AGAIN. Total hours slept....3 maybe More to follow........ |

Okay...I got busy this week & never finished. I am very surprised how much Playa has been growing, but the last three years we spent back in Cancun.
Hotel- Nice, not as fancy as I pictured it would be. The grounds were clean and easy to get to anywhere on the property. Never once saw or heard any time share people. Room- Adequate, had 2 double beds, good selection of satellite stations and a small in room refrigerator stocked with Coke, Diet Coke, Fanta Orange & a Modello. Every day they would fill up the mini-fridge. Our friends did experience some jewelery taken from their room though. Maids did a great job otherwise. Safe will cost $3 a day to use. One thing they did charge us for was for the bottled water in the bathroom ( $1 a day). Food- Buffet was below average. Could always find something to eat though. The outdoor buffett was alot better with fresh cooked mini-pizzas, tostados, rotissere chicken, burgers, fries (curly & reg.) and great ice cream. They also made sandwhiches too. This was also open late night. Front desk- We did see some people get bumped but they put them in the brand new Porto Real resort (not a bad deal). We spent alot of time at the lounge bar & a few nights would go close down the sports bar. It never really got crowded. Missed all of the shows so cannot comment there. I believe they were all inside in the Air conditioning. Pool Staff was average, not a busy resort for games. They did the basics like volleyball in the pool & beach. Boogie boards were my favorite and you could snorkle right in front of the resort. LOTS of boats parked right by the main beach. Either head north or south for better beach. Did step on a few rocks. You will see lots of locals & families out for a good time on the north side. Drinks- One of the best resorts for that. Never found a bartender we did not like. I mainly stuck with Jack Daniels while my wife liked that they had Stoli & Absolut Vodka.Bartenders were really funny, especially Thomas Cruise !! lol No internet service was up at the time we were there but we walked maybe 8 minutes to find one to communicate with the teenagers. Taxi to town ranged 30-35 pesos. I had one get me for 50 pesos because I didn't ask. I enede up always paying 50 pesos anyway. Highlights- The Alux cave was fun, not great food but worth seeing. Went deep sea fishing, caught 4 lost 4. We rented the boat right in front of the resort. Me & my friend split the cost at $ 125 each for 4 hours on about a 30' boat (Manuel was the captain). I have stayed at better resorts ( Riu Palace, Royal Hideaway, etc..) and do not believe this resort lives up to its star ratings. I would only go back if the price drops and it is more reasonable. Hope I included the main points, or I will answer any of your questions. Sorry it took so long. |
