Emily Damage (Reports only!!!)

We'll be posting reports and images of damage in this thread. If you have images to share but do not know how to post them, send a PM to me or ryberg (Steve), or Denisea.

If you do not have a damage report,

DO NOT POST IN THIS SPECIAL THREAD!!

If you are not posting a damage report, your post will be deleted.

This is not a "chatter" thread. Only reports of damage. No need to ask how condo "this" or villa "that" is or how your resort that you are going to next week fared. If you post chatter you are reducing the effectiveness of the thread. Lots of services in Playa are down and many are forced to use/share very slow connections. Wading through pages of chatter is not useful. There were no fatalities and very few injuries. If you have loved ones in the area, they will be in touch with you as the utilities come back online.

If you are curious about specific damage to a resort/AI, check this thread.

Thanks!

I spoke with our office manager Heather just minutes ago. The office and our house survived without problems (the cats too... damn!)

She was expecting it to be a bigger deal than it was. (She's a tough Chicago chick)

Lots of branches down, some trees down, not much else to report yet.

I called her on her cellphone and the reception was really bad so maybe the normal tower is down. We didn't speak long for that reason, but I was very releived.

Akumal update

James - glad to hear the news from Heather - I know you're relieved. Here is a post from Storm Caribe which has some info from Akumal:

<TABLE class=MsoNormalTable style="WIDTH: 100%" cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD style="PADDING-RIGHT: 0in; PADDING-LEFT: 0in; PADDING-BOTTOM: 0in; PADDING-TOP: 0in" vAlign=top>The following was posted on Bill-In-Tulsa’s message board by Lydia:

</TD></TR><TR><TD style="PADDING-RIGHT: 0in; PADDING-LEFT: 0in; PADDING-BOTTOM: 0in; PADDING-TOP: 0in" vAlign=top>“Hello to all,

“I am in
Canada and have just got a call from my manager and would like to give you what information I have

“All our staff that stayed in Akumal are fine.( only our core management staff stayed in the rooms above the Super Chomak and inside the Super Chomak. )

“My sister and RC are fine. They stayed in my sisters back house of Tajkumal.

“The damage was minor in comparison of what it could have been. We were expecting a total destruction of our beach side buildings made of Palapa. The snack bar only lost about 4 meters of roof, and the Lolha Restaurant just one section of Palapa roof by the Pizzeria. The large Millenium Pinata is down! It lasted 5 years though!

“There will be massive clean up, lots of water damage, and some broken windows, and blown out Air Conditioners. The roof to our maintenance bodega blew off and some damage to our staff minibus.

“The worst damage was to the vegetation.

“Others had more damage.

“Lots of windows broken at Las Casitas reception.

“Bob Mulgrew’s truck had a tree fall on it, and the windshield broke.

“Charlene’s house is ok, but upstairs they got major damage to their contents because the windows blew.

“Lots of downed light posts along the road to Yalku.

“Ruben’s store had the palapa blow off and lots of water damage.

“Very sad, my cats, were supposed to be safe in a second floor staff room behind the Super Chomak but the protector for the window blew out, and they are gone. I am truly hoping that they are found and that they were not hurt. As some of you know, I have many cats.

“I am not sure how my house is, but from the outside, the wood protectors are still in place. My ducks, goose, parakeets, turtles, rabbit, parrot are all inside! Hopefully just scared.

“My dog went to Akumal Pueblo with our dear friend and retired Nanny, Mireya, and should be safe, I am hoping.

“Gynna’s studio had some cracked windows.

“Lots of damage at the
EcologicalCenter, All doors and windows blown out apparently and the staff apartments that had Palapa are blown off.

“Travel between Chemuyil and Akumal was possible this morning but I have no idea if the highway is clear between Akumal and
Cancun.

“I hope this reaches those that might be waiting to hear a bit of news about Akumal.

I know this is a Playa board but does anyone know how things are over on Cozumel. I think they got hit with stronger winds (135 miles per hours versus 110) and some people did stay on the Island. I hope they are okay as well.

Fat Cat Survived!!!

Good news!!! Just spoke to Marisol and Paul, family is fine and the Fat Cat Catamaran survived!!!! Hopefully all the boats that were in Puerto Aventuras faired as well as they did. Sorry the phonelines weren't too good so I couldn't get a full report on the status of Puerto.

They live in Playacar and said all the trees are down everywhere but the house did fine, some very minor damage.

Send a message via MSN to NoAngelx
From cozumelmycozumel message board:
Just received the attached via email from Dave Dillehay at Aldora Divers:
"Even though the eye went through the south end of the island damage has been minimal. I would like you to post the following item:
For our concerned friends and customers…don’t worry!
Last night at midnight the northern eye wall of Emily passed over Punta Sur with 135 mph winds, and slightly reduced velocity in town. It is now gone on to bother others and we hope they have as much good fortune as did Cozumel.
At 8 am Memo Mendoza did a preliminary survey of damage. Some power lines down, branches in the streets, but apparently little or no water damage. There was no tidal surge at all. The Villa Aldora suffered a little water in the Courtyard Norte, Barracuda Suite, and Cameron Suite, due mostly to wind driven rain. My long suffering dock at the Villa (wiped out by Ivan last year) had no damage at all.
All of our boats were safe on land and tied down. As of 8 am on Monday we are dragging them back into the water and getting ready to dive again. It is our goal to be diving tomorrow, July 19th.
We have not been able to check out the rest of the island and we fear that some of the beaches on the windward side may have been damaged and our friend’s windward hotel, Ventanas Al Mar, was certainly at risk. We will provide a more comprehensive report when we have information."

Hello James and all others down there,
I hope this question qualifies to post...does anyone know how the Chac Ha condos across street from Reef Club handled the storm? We have guests staying in our condo there and can't get through to ask them if they are Okay. Thanks , Don

I wonder whose plane it was. Aerosaab flew theirs out on Saturday. It's a bit more than foolhardy to leave a plane on a tarmac during a hurricane.

It is starting to sound like my disaster team might not be needed in Cozumel or PDC. Can anybody tell me a little about injuries? Are the hospitals and clinics up and running? EMS? Any collapsed structures? Anybody getting reports from Talum? It sounds like we could be of most help out in that area.

Found this on an Akumal board:
http://www.locogringo.com/forums/tm.asp?m=93112

From Bill's board:

Zahirah writes: "Access is still denied to Tulum beach. We have been told it is considered a "disaster zone." We were finally able to communicate with staff who evacuated to Playa del Carmen.

Tulum pueblo isn´t very treesy, so I imagine cleanup will be focused on the beaches and the coastal highway. Apparently the road from Tulum pueblo to the beach is okay, but blocked by the army, though the coastal highway is washed out.

I'm not worried about the Army, as we'd go on behalf of the Mexican government. I enjoy working alongside local military on deployments. But, it does sound like Tulum may be where we'd get sent, if we get sent to Mexico.

Paamul

I just got this information -

"We just had a report from a friend in Cancun who drove down to Paamul to check it out for us. He was checking ours in particular so I have limited information about other places, but here's the status. Ours at Central South 4 the palapa collapsed on top of the trailer, but the trailer appears to be fine and the posts are fine. Jill and Troy's next door, trailer appears to be fine, but the palapa has disappeared. George's, sticking out the furthest onto the beach both palapas are gone and the trailer is smashed up. our friend said the ones along the beach, the trailers appear to be fine, but the palapas have all disappeared. I don't know if this applies to the north end as well or if he was just looking around the south. He said that the secondary row appears fine, no guarantees as he wasn't specifically looking at those. The best news is that Pepe was apparently there with the security crew to prevent looting. No power of course yet. Our friend tried to call on the cell phone from there so that we could ask more specific questions, but the service wasn't working until he was back out on the highway. All in all it's better thatn I was expecting looking at the satellite images of Emily passing dead center right over us."
It's the most I have heard about Paamul so far.

Julie
