some good people there at the CEA, apparently, their office suffered some pretty good wind damage and the storm surge may have really hurt the turtle nests, I'm sure they have some long days ahead of them in th efield and repairing the office

Great idea Nancy! The CEA looks like a great organization with a great cause...I think I'll sign on! I hope this thread attracts other organizations that could use some help right now, particularly those that help less wealthy folks with children, no insurance and a mess on their hands right now. With all the new viewers we have on the website we could come up with some notable donations to give back a little to the place we all love so much in their time of need.

I sent a PM to James on this very subject late last night. Today was a bit wild on the forum today... especially because of the high traffic on the site... and waiting for dribs and drabs of communication to come through relating to what the outcome of the storm was in terms of damage. So yes, we've already discussed it... however, we felt under the circumstances it was a little premature to publish anything just yet. Once we have a better handle on the situation, I'm sure James will have more to add on the subject.

Bringing donations to Playa

A few days ago there was a LONG posting regarding bringing donations to Playa. I can't seem to find it here anymore. There was a list of much needed items and information on where to take them. Moderator, can you help me find that posting, or another posting that might give me information. I am coming to Playa on August 10th, and intended to bring some items to donate to the local families. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

I didn't see that post, and am certainly not the moderator, but we have communicated with Lavonna at Angel Notion (www.angelnotion.com, who operate a health facility in the Colosio, and she was marshalling some efforts in the poorer parts of the community where she works. You might ask her, we have distributed items with/through her before.

Angel Notion is a great, proven charity for helping poor people in this area.

Information on helping in PDC

I posted the long email last week. I think it was removed. I shortened it to make it easier to digest and to focus on the most critical information. I've been told by several people that Brenda Alfaro (the contact here) is known for not always having the best interest of the people at heart.

BUT, this newsletter references an organization, DIF, that seems to be separate from hers. We're still planning to bring donations and have asked to give them directly to the family to help us know that it's getting to where it's needed most.
It's better than doing nothing....
From the AmericaMaya Foundation Newsletter:
Emily brought the "pruning of Playa" to the tourist zone and PlayaCar; however, it was devasting to families living in simple palapas and paper room shacks. Many of our families here have lost everything and are in need of funds to relocate, rebuild, repair; for food, clothing, and basic supplies. We will be working with DIF; the Mexican Family and Children Services Department, and area organizations that serve families to ensure your donations are received directly by the families who are in greatest need. You can donate to these families now by going to: http://www.americamaya.org/

Coming to Playa? Here's a list of things you can bring to donate for Health and Literacy.

DONATIONS FOR DIF - See letter below

Donations for Adult & Child Literacy

1.Kindergarten and Primary Workbooks in Spanish
2.Learning to write - Print and Manuscript - workbooks
3.#2 Pencils, Colored Pencils, Crayons
4.Coloring Books
5.Children's books in Spanish
6.Educational Toys: Infants-Primary School - no batteries please
7.Volunteers to teach children and adults to read and write
8. Sponsoring foundations to expand our programs and efforts.

July 10, 2005

Dear Alfaro Family,

Before anything, I wish to thank you for the attention that you have for us at DIF. I spoke with Jorge (Alfaro) and he mentioned that there is a possibility that a USA family could bring things for DIF and after thinking about our needs, here are some of the most important items we need for our families in Playa del Carmen:

  • Glucometers & Glucose Testing Strips
  • Stethoscopes
  • First Aid Kits
  • Lumbar-Sacral body Support (Sm-Medium)
  • Neck Collars
  • Ace Bandages
  • Broken Bone Casts Kits - Fiberglass Cast Materials
  • Arm Slings
  • Infant and Children's Clothing
  • Children's Blankets
  • Toothbrushes for Children
  • Toothpaste for Children
  • Eyeglasses - Children and Adult - Any kind
  • Children and Prenatal Vitamins in bottles for 30-60 days(less critical currently)

Sincerely,

Dr. Oscar Rodriguez Mendoza
Health Coordinator, DIF Municipal, Playa del Carmen

All - This was an article I pulled from Playa Maya News, the local newspaper. Here are other avenues for helping the locals recover from Emily:

We have recieved many e-mails from people who want to lend a helping hand to those in need afer Hurricane Emily. There are plenty of people who lost their homes, and who need help rebuilding and restoring their homes and lives. Below are a few non-profit organizations who have been working with the local community for years, and who have upstanding reputations in the community as well. Just click on the links below, and you can contact the organizations directlyl. Any help that you can offer will be greatly appreciated!

Angel Notion is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds and donations to provide education, medical aid, and opportunities for people of lesser means and special needs. Angel Notion is located in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. http://www.angelnotion.com/

The Bomberos are our local fire department, and have been active in, and around, the community for years. Not only do they fight our fires, and respond to emergency calls, but they do gift drives for local charities, charity events, and outreach programs. http://www.bomberosrivieramaya.org/

The eye of the storm hit directly over Xel-Ha Ecological Park. Click here to see a map of the hurricane path. Due to this fact one very hard hit area was Puerto Aventuras, in particular, the poblado on the West side of the freeway. The local spay and neuter clinic, and the community school, were both severely damaged: Check out these past Playa Maya News articles for more information on both of these nonprofit organizations, but keep in mind that power and phone lines are still down, so it may be difficult to get through, BE PATIENT AND KEEP TRYING!
