Trip report July 11-20
Beautiful weather the whole trip except for Emily. We had a chance to leave Sat but decided to stay just to see with our own eyes the effect that Emily would have on Playa. Before Emily we had a great meal with DPReefer at The Glaas Bar. Sunday July 17, Anna's birthday and people swimming at 3PM in the afternoon, like nothing is going to happen. Look out to the southeast and you know there is a monster of a storm out there. 7PM and the police start using their sirens to get people indoors. By 9 Pm the wind was starting to blow us backwards on the rooftop. Hunkered down 10-3AM. It blew but never felt unsafe. We felt very safe at Villa Sacbe. They gave us water, food, candles, flashlights, fire extinguisher and raincoats. The electricity came back Monday around 1PM, I was eating at El sarape at !2 Monday. Almost all the roads were cleared of debris Tueday and the TB was open/ What more can you ask for. Tuesday night was great. We met Sarahb and went to El Pirata for some great reggae music on the beach. What was nice about that evening is that there was no overlapping music from the ******. It was closed due to palapa damage. You know that big buoy on the beach around the Mimi Del Mar, well now it's under the terrace of Captain Tutix. I went to Villa Flambyon, walked in, asked the two beautiful women if everything was ok. Just some tiles around the stairs were stripped. Walked back and heard a bad story about a family left to fend for themselves during Emily. They went to a shelter and the 3 kids had to sleep on the floor with water coming in. That's the part of a hurricane you have to watch out for. It's like a power washer hitting your windows and doors. It's smart to board them up. The AI people were upset, they lost out on the free food and had to lodge in Playa town. So the lesson is stay in town during hurricane season. Andy

Andy, thanks for the first hand report. I really wondered what it would be like to be in Playa at that time. It is amazing how the locals deal with this, I have to remember that most have lived thier whole lifes dealing with hurricane season.
Nice to hear you had a night at El Pirata with BP interferring!! |

Kim, it was amazing how the locals bounced back. As one gentleman told me who was was there for Gilbert, "the only difference is that with Gilbert not one leaf was left on any tree from Cancun to Tulum." Emily wasn't a Cat 5 like Gilbert. Andrea, no Peter did not come. He has a job, finally. He needs cash for college. After the hurricane Tuesday night we met Sarah at the TB and moved on to El Pirata for a couple of the best lime Margarita's, the moon was shining on the water and the reggae music booming on the beach. As good as it get's. After 10 days your getting in groove. Staying out late not feeling tired and dam we have to go home. I'm going to register for the Peep Fest now. We just bought our tickets. Andy

Andy,
So good to read your voice. Give our best to Anna and your kids. Kathy speaks often of the good time she had with you at Villa Flamboyan and with your daughter everytime they saw each other. We both enjoyed you and your family. To paraphrase good Jewish friends of ours, in their ancient saying Next year in Playa. I guess I should do the counter thingie in the signature, but we're going to be there such a short time, I don't know if it counts Ron |

Andy, tell Anna happy "belated" birthday from us....what a way to celebrate! Villas Sacbe does feel very secure and I know I would have felt very safe there during a hurricane (as safe as one could feel!) There were construction workers pounding on a concrete wall (the new condos being built to the north of VS) the day we arrived, I watched them out the window.....you couldn't even come close to hearing the pounding. The place is very soundproof! The courtyard has a tendency to echo a bit....funny story....mad boyfriend? at 2ish in the morning rattleing the gate and yelling at his girlfriend? because she locked him out in the street. It was amusing the first time, by the third round, it wasn't funny anymore. I think the policia came and took him out of his misery. I do think whatever happened, he WON'T do it again! Glad ya'll had a great trip!

I feel the need to include this excerpt from my Hurricane Emily thread post here to indicate the high level of stress Andy was under as a result of the impending hurricane:
