Ft Stevens outside of Astoria is another great one. We'll be stopping there on our way back from the NW Peep Fest. It can also be done online.
Don't know if you are an ocean or a mountain lover but Mt Rainier Natl Park has some nice campgrounds (no utilities) and Mt St Helens can be a good day trip from there. The campgrounds around St Helens are pretty blah; don't know that you actually want to stay there.
Thanks for the tips! I'm glad you told me about the campgrounds being blah around Mt St Helens, because I was really thinking about staying there. I'm tried to get on the Washington reservation site for the last two days, but it doesn't open up.

I love both oceans and mountains. I'm hoping to stay at least three nights relatively close to the ocean, though. We had already penciled in Astoria for at least one night.

Lots of neat stuff around there. We like the Silver Salmon Grill for lunch or dinner. There is a maritime museum there and a trolley along the river. Kathy worked on some of the exhibits at the museum. Pretty neat stuff

Donny, Thanks! I still can't get past the first page for Washington State Parks. I'll have to try again tomorrow. I'll check out the parks by Oak Harbor. I think I have relatives there that I could up, too.

Astoria--is that where the Goonies house is? The one my niece won on E-Bay, but had to get out of because she didn't have the money.

Roni, is it a shipping port? Bob likes ships. We'll have to get the scoop about the exhibits when we see you. We'll go to Astoria after the meet.

I just got on it & it worked fine. hope it starts working for ya 'cause it's a great tool.

Astoria is also where "Kindergarten Cop" was filmed. They used to have one of the country's largest parade's there sometime in August, I believe.

Well, it doesn't look like we can get Miss Heather up there, but I am willing to try. In fact, since he's on the same side of the country, I think I may try to squeeze in a visit to my son who's stationed in San Diego (assuming he's still there then). If any of you have any ideas how best to do that (connecting through LAX or whathaveyou), please pass them along and I'll work on writing it in stone.

What do you want your basic itinerary to look like?

Mexico -> San Diego (Probably a number of airlines will get you to San Diego from Cancun with one stop somewhere else, like America West thru Phoenix.)

San Diego -> Campground (If you go San Diego -> Burbank, we can pick you up in Burbank, stay a night at our house, next day on the road. We have room in the SUV. I plan on stopping Thurs night somewhere between Sacramento and Redding, and getting a hotel room for that night, next day finish the drive to the campground).
(You may be able to go San Diego -> Portland and hitch a ride from there, that would be about 1 day car trip to the campground instead of 2).

As for camping gear, I think between all of us, we can whip up tent, sleeping bags, air mattresses, lanterns, blah, blah, blah. Bring an empty pillow case, stuff clothes in it for a pillow (Wicked Weasel's don't work well for this :p ).

I'd see more of the countryside if I went with you guys. Are you sure you wouldn't mind a house guest and a tagalong? If not, I'll look into making the arrangements. Seeing as how my communication with my son is limited, it may take a while (maybe I'll be one of those geeky travelers and bring my own pillow since I don't have any WWs anyway and may actually wanna wear my other clothes). Of course, I may need some guidance on tent camping. I'm a motor home girl myself, but I can make do. This sounds like fun!
