reef club is in the playacar strip close to PDC and is known as a "budget" resort.

Barcelo Maya is about 20 minute drive south of PDC and is quite a bit larger and "upscale" than the Reef Club. It is large but isolated on a great strip of beach and has many restaurants, bars, big pools, etc.

If you want a "resort vacation" I'd go with the Barcelo. However, if you want a cheaper AI close to town, maybe consider the Reef Club ... however, many people would say go with the Viva Maya or Viva Azteca rather than the Reef Club as they are about the same size and offer better value.

Take a look at this board for more information:

Here is an interesting site with independant traveller's reviews of most of the resorts in the area:

I have no personal experience, as yet, with either resort but I can tell you that my fiance and I have booked our wedding at the Barcelo Maya this coming December!

CONGRATULATIONS!

I think one of the cool things about getting married down there is that it ensures a wealth of anniversary trips, no? Hope I'm right!

Have a fantastic wedding and I am very much looking to your trip report(s)!!
