Iberostar Tucan-Trip Report-Part 1
Iberostar Tucan Trip Report~Part 1
After much thought, I’ve decided to do a condensed version trip report of our trip to Playa del Carmen and Cancun. I’ve only got a few more days before I have to get back to school so I’ll try to get both weeks in before d-day! We’ve been trying different AIs for the past few years in Cancun as well as the Riviera Maya. This year we decided to spend our first week at the Iberostar Tucan and our second week at the Omni Cancun. Well, I have to say, this is the first year that we were extremely pleased with both properties! Let me also say that we’re not hard to please, but we work very hard for our money, so we expect to get good service, edible food, and most importantly to us, a beautiful beach. The IB* Tucan and the Omni didn’t let us down! We arrived at the IB* Tucan at about 2pm on Aug. 3, and our room was ready. Laura, who helped us at recepción, was extremely nice, and I was thrilled to get a 3rd floor room in building 12. We had a partial ocean view as well as proximity to the beach, exactly as I had requested. We’ve never stayed at this property before, so I have nothing to compare it to before Emily, but I’ve seen enough pictures to know it sustained quite a bit of damage in the jungle. The theater was closed, with half of the palapa roof being replaced. Notice the worker sitting up top I was thrilled we weren’t staying at the Gala again, as we did the past two summers. Their lobby roof was being completely replaced, and the Oh La La buffet restaurant and bar was closed for renovations (and had no roof either). Anyway, the shows were held in the Convention hall, which had A/C, so that was an added perc as far as I’m concerned. (Even though we never made it through a whole show! You know…sun + drinks + food = sleep!) Christian, our 8 year old, discovered ping pong the first day. And that was where he spent the first 3 days of our vacation…at the ping pong tables. I was really getting sick of running up from the beach every half hour to check on him, so when he decided some of the boys there weren’t so nice, I was relieved that he took some time off and spent it with us on the beach. Speaking of the beach, it was fine. There was a little more erosion than last year (we stayed next door so we checked out the IB* beach) and the fact that they have umbrellas to use was a real treat. We were able to situate ourselves right near the water so we could keep an eye on Christian if he was in the water without one of us. (notice the tilted palapa and leafless palm tree!) I noticed there was a little seaweed in the water in the morning, but by noon it was gone and the water was clearer, but not as clear as it is in Cancun. I guess the original beach bar got wiped out in the hurricane. All that was left was the cement slab and the water pipes. On the day we got there, they delivered some plywood and planks to the beach. By the end of our week the new beach bar (probably temporary) was up and running! This is what they had done after just two days We ate at the Italian restaurant for our first dinner reservation, and it was nice. They haven’t really “redecorated” it yet, I don’t think, because the room didn’t really “feel” like you were in an Italian restaurant. I don’t know what it looked like before the hurricane, but there really weren’t any decorations to speak of. The food was good, but I don’t remember what we ordered. I just asked my son and he had ravioli which he loved. It seems like it was eons ago, and I didn’t write any notes. I do remember that it had A/C and that was very pleasant! On Monday night we met one of my colleages and her friend in town for dinner. They were staying at the Mayan Palace and had rented a car. We ended up eating at la Regula and it was okay. I look like I've had one too many cervezas and Ed looks like he's been out in the sun too long!! We had plans with them for the next day to go down to Akumal to visit the library and deliver some supplies, as well as snorkel in the bay. The next morning they picked up Christian and me (my husband couldn’t be persuaded to leave his lounge chair on the beach) at 9:30 and we headed south. We saw the radio tower which was folded in half. I wanted to get a pic of it on the way back and of course I forgot until we were already past it. We stopped at the Hekab Be library to see Carlos and the kids. There were lots of kids there and some of them were having a popcicle treat from a street vendor. Carlos was sitting on the curb when we arrived. When I saw him I called to him and he rounded up all the kids and we went inside. He didn’t remember me from last year, but I’m sure he gets lots of visitors. We gave him our supplies, and when he opened the bag with all the McDonald’s Happy Meal Toys that Christian’s been saving for them, their eyes lit up! We took a few pics and then we left. I asked him about the huge concrete foundation that’s going up around the library and he said he didn’t know what it would be but knew that the neighbor was building something. They’re being surrounded on 3 sides…it’s really sad. Even the sidewalk is cut off halfway to the road! Our next stop was the Turtle Bay Bakery, where June and Linda, our chauffeurs, needed some breakfast. We had smoothies and they had the breakfast burritos, which they raved about. (I guess he didn’t get enough to eat at the Turtle Bay Bakery!) Finally we were on the beach and ready to snorkel. Christian and I rented life jackets and Linda and June rented chairs. Neither of them wanted to snorkel, but they were more than happy to just chill on the beach, since they couldn’t even go in the water at Mayan Palace due to the rocky beach. I was so excited about the snorkeling that I forgot to take any pictures at the beach! Christian and I spent the next hour and a half swimming with the turtles and checking out all the cool fish and coral in the bay. We were thrilled to see some turtles this year, because last year we didn’t see any! We stopped at Lol Ha for a drink and a snack before we headed back to PDC. We got back to the hotel at about 3pm and relaxed the rest of the day. This vacation was all about relaxing…and it’s amazing how fast you can get into that mode! More to come!

Glad you're enjoying...I'll try to get the next installment up tonight. Not sure about posting a TR on the Omni here. This is a Playa del Carmen board and the Omni is in Cancun. If one of the moderators gives the ok, I will.

Iberostar Tucan-Trip Report-Part 2
Iberostar Tucan ~ Part 2
Most of our week at the Tucan was spent on the beach during the day enjoying the sun, sand and surf. Our 8 year old son, Christian, finally got tired of getting beat by the bigger kids in ping pong, so he started spending more time with his new friend Matthew from Los Angeles. He was 10 and was very sweet. He’s been to the resort several times, so he new the drill, and he took Christian with him all over the place. They played horseshoes, bocce, and body surfed together. It was nice that Christian made friends with him, because it gave us a break from constantly entertaining him. When he wanted to rest, he’d join me under the palapa and read or play his game boy. Christian and Matthew at the kids show We ate at the Mexican restaurant later in the week and we had a great waiter, but once again, old age is creeping in and I can’t remember his name. My husband wore a very nice ribbed shirt with his dress pants and they wouldn’t let him in because it was sleeveless. He had to run all the way back to the room to change and the waiter was teasing him that they’d let the women in in bikinis but the men had to have long pants and sleeved shirts! Poor Ed was drenched in sweat by the time he got back! We enjoyed the appetizer bar there a lot. They had several different ceviches and sopes (which I had in Mexico City and they were much better there!) as well as chimichangas and many other things I didn’t recognize. I’m not a big fan of Mexican food, much to most people’s surprise, seeing how I’m a Spanish teacher. I had steak kebob tacos for dinner and they were good. Christian had beef tacos and Ed had the arrechera steak. They both liked their dinners. The Mexican coffee for dessert looked better than it tasted, but again, I’m not a big coffee drinker either! We also tried the steakhouse our last night there. It was good too, but not air conditioned. Our steaks were good, not wonderful, and I didn’t feel good the next day. I’m not sure what it was from, but I know it wasn’t from drinking too much because I only had two glasses of wine. I’m starting to think that what always makes my stomach upset in Mexico is the warm milk they put in the coffee. I had it every morning, and by the 5th day I was getting sharp stomach pains every so often. It’s not enough to make me stay in bed, but I feel like I have no energy and I start having gastro intestinal issues, if you know what I mean. Luckily, I still had the prescription of Cipro that I took with me in April, so I started taking that and within a day I felt much better. Interestingly enough, when we got to Cancun, they served cold cream with the coffee and I never had any problems the whole week. That’s what started me thinking that it might by the warm milk, which might not be pasteurized. I didn’t take the Cipro in Cancun because it makes you very sensitive to the sun and I was burning even with SPF 30, and I already had a dark tan! One day we walked south on the beach past the Gala to take some pictures. This year we brought our tripod and nice clothes to put on for a Xmas card pic, but the wind wasn't kind to our hair, and the camera was a little too far away, I think. But we'll probably use the picture below of the three of us anyway because everyone loves those beach pics in cold December!! Anyway, overall, we loved the Iberostar Tucan, and we’d go back again for sure. We don’t say that about many places either! The service was excellent everywhere, and the food was good (not gourmet, but high quality with a large selection). I thought the food at the Palladium was a little better, but the beach at Iberostar is much more user friendly, IMO. I hope you found this report useful and/or enjoyable. Next year we might not be traveling because we’re adding on a 950 square foot addition to our home, and we’ll have to wait and see how our savings account looks in the new year! But we took some wonderful videos which we can sit and watch during the winter while enjoying a warm fire in the new fireplace! |

Okay, Shammy, I'll post the Omni TR here too. The contrast between the two areas is pretty incredible. Where Playa is tranquilo in both it's pace and sea, Cancun is quite the opposite! I think it'll make for an interesting post!~ Thanks for the ok!
