Hotel Corto Maltes
Has anyone stayed here recently? It looks very cute but I am wondering how rustic it is, I have heard they have upgraded some things. Is there a certain cabana you would reccomend? Is the beach nice? Where is it located? I am also wondering about Shangri La Caribe. I see it is more upscale. I am looking for a room with a great beach nearby in May.

We stayed there last March. It is rustic but not dirty. We stayed in the cabana all the way to the back. I would stay there again if I could get a cabana near the front. (#1-#4) The shower took a little to get used to, it was either very hot or cold. But once you got a system down it was possible to get the water temp pretty even. It has a very nice beach and great little bar. It is located right next to El Faro (the lighthouse), or just down the beach from the ******. Shangri La Caribe is very upscale in comparrison, but I have not stayed there. We are thinking of staying a Corto Maltes again this year for peep fest.

I'd suggest holding off on making reservations at Corto Maltes... especially that far in advance. 2 weeks ago during a conversation with one of our local expat friends in Playa, we were told that the Corto Maltes property has been sold. The hotel will be leveled to make room for new luxury condos. Those towards 5th Av starting at $400,000 USD and those on the beach starting at $700,000 with the penthouse units going for more. Of course, it could just be a rumor... like the HRC.

NO!!! I hope that's a rumor. One of the few places left in Playa with the "old Playa character" |

The difference between the Corto Maltese and the Shangri-La are night and day. Corto is very rustic, but lots of old Playa character, very laid back no frills, and no AC. The beach at Corto comes and goes, when we were there last it was nice and wide. Shangri-La is fancier, and has a gorgeous beach |
