I was wondering about having it redone to make the colors more vibrant plus I'd like to get another on the top of my foot. Love to have a falling feather there in black/white/light blue. My son designed mine as part of his high school graduation requirement. I got to be his show and tell. We had a great time and it's something from him that's mine permanently. Other than him of course!
Actually, when I had my tattoos redone, I had 2 of the originals buried/covered up by the new ones. The only one that I sort of left as it was and had enhanced was was the libra symbol on my left hip. The artist re-colored and shaded the libra sign and then added the rose to it to dress it up.

All of my tats had first done so long ago that the quality of the ink available at that time wasn't anywhere close to what is available today. They had really faded out over time so that NO color was left in any of them ~ basically just the black outlines were left.

I had never been especially pleased with the way the ankh had turned out, so had it totally buried by a fairly large black tribal style tattoo. It was pretty tricky to come up with a design to do it. This tattoo has retained its original black coloring well since I had it redone in aboout 1993, as it's not often exposed to the sun.

The ying-yang on my shoulder was easily turned into the center of a flower surrounded by twining leaves. This tattoo still shows its colors pretty well, but because this tattoo is frequently exposed to sunlight, the brightness of the colors has faded. If you want to keep good color in your tats, they should always be protected by sunblock. I'm just too lasy to do THAT.

The libra sign on my hip was what I would call "enhanced." Worked out fine. The colors have remained pretty bright ~ nice red roses with green leaves. Again, this tattoo rarely sees the sunlight.

The tattoos I'm MOST fascinated by ~ and have always been ~ are the all over body tattoos done in Japan. These tattoos ~IREZUMI ~ in Japanese ~ are specifically called Oukoshisei. They are never done on exposed parts of the body and if I'm not mistaken, most people getting these still utilize artists who adhere the the "old style" method of design and ink application with sharpened bamboo sticks.

Click IREZUMI to see samples of one man's body art. Once at the site, you can view close-ups of these amazing tattoos by clicking on the menu links. I've had some fantasies about having some extensive artwork done, but never followed through with it, and probably won't at 58, but you NEVER know!

PS ~ Be SURE to click on the movie video link which is located at the lower right under the tattoed man on the main page!

I may eventually get another tattoo, but I don't think I have the committment at this stage in my life necessary for traditional Japanese body art. I also no longer have the skin tone I did at 20 or 30 either...too much sun over too many years.
