Michael is right! It always seems to show rain, clouds and thunderstorm on the weather sites. We have been going to the Riviera Maya for years now over Laborday Week and so far every time we experience only some short torential rain storms with the sun out 20 minutes later. Or you get a thunderstorm and than shortly after it is sunny again. We actually love watching thunderstorms over the ocean or Mayan Ruins. I love feeling the electricity in the air and that rumbling. If it is at night to us it is very romantic. We don't get many thunderstorms in Southern CA and I kind of miss them from living in Germany. I am sure you will have a great time! We will arrive on Saturday.

Right now, a big thunderstorm seems to be moving slowly in. However, this is the first one I have seen during the day in a while.
As Michael said, they always forecast thunderstorms. I suspect this is the CYA method of weather forecasting. Since we are surrounded by tropical jungle, the chances are good that there will be a thunderstorm somewhere in the area at any given time. The rest of the time, it is sunny. Enjoy. |

Truth is, a HUGE thunderstorm is pouring like crazy where I am right now. Which probably means that in Playa it's dry as a bone, and also that it will be great weather for you tomorrow, once it gets this out of its system

It is an interesting thing. Let's say it is cloudy and raining in Playa just drive South or North 1/2 hr and most likely it will be sunny there. Works the other way around as well. Kind of like the cloud that follows the Pink Panther.

The long version.
I guess a more precise technical answer is not that the forecast is wrong, but that it is completely misleading.
PdS provides this more exact explanation. Quote:
And it is really nice to have a storm blow through on a hot day. So don't worry about the weather. The chance of a "rain stops play" vacation are very remote. If you do find yourself stuck on a rainy day, you may want to go south along the coast. Occasionally a storm will hover over one place. It is not that common but it can happen. Last year we saw this in Playa. We drove south and by the time we reached Aventuras, the weather was nice. By the time we reached Akumal the weather was perfect. When we returned to Playa that evening, we heard that it had rained all day. Earlier this year, my wife and I stayed at the Playa Maya and we spent the early morning hours swimming off the beach in front of the hotel, we were done by 10am. And just as we got into the hotel a storm hit. We were so lucky, if we had spent a few minutes more in the water we would have been soaked. |
