Help with some nitty-gritties for my weekend plans

Sorry to sound so self-centered, but my eldest daughter turns 13 tomorrow; and what she wanted for her birthday was to go up Montreal to drink in some French culture.

I made appropriate plans, and was okay with everything until Katrina hit.
My husband and I are both concerned about the gas issue -- not cost so much, as availability. The fact that W asked America to conserve energy is a huge red flag for me that there is the potential for a real problem.

It is hard for either hubby or me to get an accurate read on what gas supplies will be like for the weekend. We will be driving from Connecticut up through NY State and into Canada. Prices have skyrocketed at least 75 cents in the last two days, but there do not seem to be any reports of shortages here in the Northeast. Most of the reports seem to be the South and lower West.

So what do folks out there think? Is America having a collective panic attack, but our gas supplies are okay?
Should we go ahead with the trip to Montreal?

Thanks!

MWC, I believe we really have a supply problem until those 9 refineries get back on line. Hopefully a few of them will be back on line early next week.

This is just my dos pesos, but don't let something like this gas crisis change your life, yes it will be costly, but what's going to be the most lasting memory? I think it will be the time you spent together and your daughter will remember that you made this trip happen for her no matter the cost. I am not changing my plans to go to Kansas this weekend for the same reason. Just my opinion.

Being in the hospitality business, we have been discussing this issue greatly today. Playabum, I agree, the COST of gasoline should and probably would not affect peoples travel decisions all that much....the AVAILABILITY of gasoline on the other hand WILL likely affect that decision.

I'd go for it. Just top off your tank every chance you get. To hell with the cost. You're making memories upon which you can't put a price. Your daughter is a lucky girl!!

Hope you have a GREAT time!!!

I havn't heard any news about gas shortages. Go for it,,,,,,,and if you don't make it all the way to Canada you can visit me up in Oxford Maine,,,,,wherever that is (obligatory family visit).

There's LOTs of news about gas shortages in North/South Carolina...most stations in our town are out of gas! Not sure how much has to do with panic buying or trying to get filled up before the prices go higher...but the shortages are real, they are all over local and national news and they have caused major cancellations in my Labor Day weekend business....I wish it were not so!

Be warned when you enter Canada & have your "Monster"Card ready as the price of gas in Canada is absolutely disgusting. Because of your shortage our gov't has taken it upon themselves to hit us with more tax on gas (we have loads of our own supply here). Not sure what it is in Quebec but it hit $1.25 (almost $6 US a gallon if I converted right) a litre in Ontario the other day & in the 'Peg was almost that high in places. Enjoy your trip, it's your daughter & she's only 13 ONCE.

Thanks, everyone, we went and had a great time. Gas was available everywhere, but no bargain! Actually, US gas is STILL a bargain, compared to Canada.

We walked and metro'd everywhere in Montreal. The Biodome was neat. What a nice city -- a lot of diversity, seemingly in a very relaxed atmosphere. Makes me think the US is making a huge mistake in limiting student visas so severely, as you can tell that a lot of foreign students are going to university in Montreal ... and there are a lot of neighborhoods that were marginal in our last visit, that are now "gentrifying" and showing a lot of vitality. (With a lot of restaurants with an incredible range of ethnicities.

But, the beers cannot compare to Mexico!
