We are headed to the Riu Palace. April 06. I think its now called the Riu Palace Mexico. Looked at booking at the new Riu Palace Riveria Maya being built ( or just built ) I think still in Playacar. But it's not scheduled ( per the Riu web site ) to be open until next Feb. We were afraid of delays or continued construction affecting our trip.

TLLL (that would be The Lovely Lady Lawyer) and I have stayed at the Palace 4-5 times in the last 18 months, if that tells you somethng about our choice.
From a friendly, helpful staff to great food and quality booze, the Palace does it right.

A question for those of you that have been there. When and where are long pants required there.
I prefer shorts. I have heard that men are required to wear pants at all the restaurants in the evenings. I understand wearing them at the sit down restaurants, but are they required at the buffet restaurant(s)?

The doorman is the best I've seen anyplace. The rest of the staff are also exceptional. I think you'll get a kick out of the "present" Emily left on the beach. TLLL refers to it as her Beach Buoy. You'll enjoy your visit.

Make sure you get there before 6:30 one evening just to see and hear Mannie (Manuel) the doorman do his welcome in close to 100 languages. Everybody raves about Miriam, and I think I have her picture from when I was there, but at the Palace you don't get near the bar unless you specifically go there because you just sit down at a table and a waiter comes and takes your order and another delivers it. |

Someone asked about pants. As far as I could tell, they were required for all evening meals, but not for other meals. James A. |

When we were there a few weeks ago they were allowing shorts in El Patio (Steak House) because it was so hot and there's no AC, but once it cooled a bit they were inforcing the long pants (for men, women can wear shorts
) rule again. BTW, it didn't seem to matter what kind of pants as long as they were long pants. I saw everything from slacks to jeans (lots) to those excerise pants with the stripe down the sides. And oh yeah, they allowed men in with capris - like the Eurpoean men have been wearing.Quite a few men would change into shorts after dinner as my husband did a few times. Nope, not writing a report. Too short a trip and we just hung out at the beach, both at the Riu and at Mamitas, and went to town every night. But I will say that I LOVED the Palace...it was spectacular and I would stay there again in a heartbeat. I've never met so many friendly employees who go out of the way to say "Hola" or ask you how everything is....and we were not even on the grounds that much! Manuel the doorman was THE best ever, we always gave him the baseball playoff scores as we were leaving to go into town...and I let him know how wonderful he was with a big fat tip the night before we left because he is most deserving. Food was outstanding, drinks were very good (didn't drink much there at all though!). We never went to any of the ala cartes because the food was so good at the buffet...plus the kids would rather have lots of things to choose from. Definitely not the most kid friendly place there is, but I knew that and it was not an issue for us because my kids do not utilize a kids club nor did they have any down time where they needed to be occupied by the staff. They grabbed a boogie board every morning and happliy played in the BEAUTIFUL, WARM ocean all day long! I only saw a handful of other kids there, and most were very young, too young to care about a kids club or activities other than swimming. I would think if you had kids between the ages of say, 5-10, you'd be better off at one of the other properties...unless mom and dad like to be pampered by all the Palace amenities! The ONLY complaint I have is the air conditioning in the room, it just did NOT cool the room down properly. We did say something right away and I have no idea if anyone ever came to take a look at it, but it never got any better. The air coming out was not "cold", nor even what I'd call "cool"...it was just air, and damp air at that. Didn't matter what you set that dial on, it was the same temp all the time. All the other hotels I've stayed at, when you put the air on, it does cool and dry out the room, and that did not happen here. Clothing that was dry at night, was damp in the morning. Forget about drying your hair or putting on make up...it would sweat right off. Both Chris and I were quite warm sleeping at night, uncomfortably so. But I really believe this is an issue at all the Riu properties as this is one of the reasons I left the Playacar last year. THAT room was unbearably hot, the A/C didn't work AT ALL, and they admitted it was broken...and they would not move us to a room that had a working A/C, said they didn't have one for at least two more days!..so we left because we were only there for 4 days. So I don't know what's up with the A/C, maybe it was just OUR room this time, maybe this doesn't happen in all rooms...can't say for sure. But it did bother me A LOT. Other than that, it was a perfect resort in every way. K? Good enough?
