On the lighter side...A Camping Trip Report - Rev 09/24

The Mike and Bonny DubU Most Excellent Camping Adventure

The adventure actually begins in late August, when MikeW uttered the strained words “Sooo…….what DO you want for your birthday?”

I said, “I want to go camping with you the week before I go back to work”

MikeW said, “But my boss will pay for a condo and a trip to Hawaii that week—all I have to do is work for one day there.”

Yeah right!

Okay, so I am blonde, and you are saying to yourselves, “Wow that sounds great! She MUST be crazy to turn down a trip like that.” Very true, I am crazy, but that is beside the point. You see…I know that really means more than one day of work. Also, MikeW’s cell phone works in Hawaii, which means that his boss or any clients can call him, and so… Where is the vacation together?
<O:p
I smile sweetly and said, “No-bleeping-way do I want to go to Hawaii. I want to go CAMPING for my birthday.” This ensures that I get MikeW all to myself, AND that I get to go camping. (Yes, I am blonde AND selfish.) Cells phone and computers don’t work where we go camping. (Gne…gne)

<O:p
So, MikeW has 3 weeks preparation notice for this adventure, and begins to check the tent trailer for any problems. He cranks the trailer (it is a ‘pop-up’ tent trailer, vintage 1978) and hears a very loud wood-cracking noise. Even though I know absolutely nada about tent trailers and electrical wiring, I do know when something makes that sound, all is not well. This is confirmed when I hear the 5-cuss-words-in-a-row uttered from MikeW’s mouth and one of which contains the word “mother” in it.

I'll let him tell you what happened next...

Bonny needs at least one long camping trip a year, or she is in the duldrums until next year. She needs her camping fix, and I'd better make sure she gets it. I enjoy it as well, but I don't need the fix.

We had decided to do some mods to the PUP (Pop-Up Tent trailer) before the trip.
Get rid of tilt-up wardrobe - it's useless and takes up a lot of room when stored
Add insulation to pull out bed areas (it was gonna be cold where we were going)
Add carpet - Those 3AM wake up calls are even worse when you jump onto cold linoleum
Add portable wire shelving - Shelves I could hook up quickly after the trailer is setup. Store food items, etc.
Add drawers for clothes - some plastic ones we could throw on top of the unused bed.
Check battery
Check Water pump - Made lot's of noise but did not work last year
Check furnace - didn't work last year

3 weeks ought to be enough time to do all those and pack for the trip.

I start to crank up the top, until it got about 3 feet up, and one of the front corner raising cables broke , and that corner dropped about 1.5 feet while I heard cracking wood on the back of the trailer roof.

I fully understand how a combination of an exiciting camping trip can fire up the marital .......juices and how the first week back at work can make one busy, but ya'll need to post the next episode, doncha think? Ya'll have laptops, one of you can post while the other is busy with.......other activities

Before I go on, you need to understand a few things about me.

Thing 1 - Bonny and the kids know when I'm getting upset, when I'm upset, and when I'm about to blow. They can figure out the first two by the number of curse words I string together consecutively, getting upset 2 or 3, upset 3 - 5. Now when I'm gonna blow it's two words, they are the infamous "mother f....r". Typically when I utter those last 2 words, wife and kids leave the room if not the state.

Thing 2 - I have a Type A personality. I'm not proud of it, but it's there.

Thing 3 - Goes with 2, I'm impatient.

Thing 4 - When I give out instructions, I expect the other person to get it, I should not have to repeat myself, I expect action immediately; even if what came out of my mouth is completely foreign sounding mumbo jumbo, unclear, incoherent, mumbling noises.

Thing 5 - Just like any other male in the world, I've done everything. Do not second guess my opinion, or my instructions (orders). Honestly going thru school I worked in a print shop, bicycle shop, I was an auto mechanic, graduated with Geology major, math minor, went to work in facilities management, dealt a lot with contractors, did some commercial and residential electrical, drew electrical plans for custom homes, and all that leads to getting into computer programming. So don't freaking second guess me.

Thing 6 - I do everything myself, I don't trust others to do things right, it takes too long to explain to someone how to do something, and it's usually easier and sometimes cheaper to do things myself.

Okay so where were we. Oh yeah, I had given myself 3 weeks to get the PUP into tip-top shape before leaving for vacation. The trailer is a 1977 Starcraft Galaxy 6, with a beautiful, bright yellow interior.

As I'm cranking up the PUP, my wife is off to the side and behind the trailer doing a bit of gardening. I wish she would do more of that she so enjoys it, the yard looks so much better, she wears nice things when she gardens , and she feels good about it later. As I crank, the cable at the left-front corner breaks and that part of the roof drops immediately, as the back of the roof begins to crack. I scramble grab a piece of wood and run to the corner that dropped and beging pushing up the roof with the wood. I'm guessing that corner is about 60 pounds to push while the other 3 corners are still in place. MOTHER F.....R . I scream for Bonny, but I've already screamed the worst of "Thing 1" and she has this stunned, scared, frightened look on her face . She wants to run, but can tell I'm gonna need some help. I yell at her to get over and lower the roof down, or I said something like that. This is where "Thing 6" gets in the way, she has never raised or lowered the roof. So "Thing 4" kicks in and I start to give the dreaded mumbling instructions, which she is having a hard time understanding, and I'm getting even more upset because she isn't doing what I'm thinking because she's trying to figure out what I'm saying. This whole time the roof is getting heavier, and I'm getting "Thing 3". She's complaining she's trying to do what I ask. I'm saying things like, "NO the other one", "not that way", "Hold the handle and pull the other handle out", "faster", "slower".

So we finally get the roof lowered back down. She's scared, I'm angry. I take a quick inspection and notice all 4 of the roof raising supports have pushed through the plywood floor, some more than others. It also looks like one pushed thru because of rot.

First thought to cross my mind, what the hell was the wood cracking in the back of the roof and how bad is it. (The roof is wrapped in aluminum, with the actual top being cell foam glued to the top, and there is thin wood (about 1/2") by about 6" on all 4 sides that supports the top, that was the wood that was cracking. Second thought, I'll never be able to fix this in 3 weeks. Third thought, Hawaii sounds pretty good, I'll try again.

Me "Honey, I know you really want to go camping, but we can go to Hawaii it'll be really cheap?" Bonny with sad face, "I really want to go camping, I've been looking forward to it all summer, and I want to do some fishing with you". Me "Well how about San Diego, or north of Santa Barbara". Bonny "I really want to go camping". Me, "I don't think we can get it fixed in time". Bonny "Well take it somewhere and have it fixed". Me, "Thing 6" kicks in again, that and I can be cheap at times, "No way, that'll cost more than the trailer is worth".

OMG, Mike. Your personality sounds identical to mine. I feel sorry for you. And even sorrier for Bonny and the kids.

I am glad to see you write that. See, when MikeW wrote "Just like every other male in the world", I thought I might have to come up with another gender category for myself.

Kathy is the fix-it, do it herself person around here. I am pretty handy, but she is the figure it out, jury-rig it, make it work, project person.

I do the dishes and the laundry, cook her good food and keep the house from getting too cluttered/dirty whilst she is working on projects. I am also her helper and consultant and go-to-the-hardware store guy.

You know I reread my last post like 3x and didn't see any problems. But now, I reread it again and I just fixed some of the sentences (phrases). If you were reading really fast you missed the problems, and got the meaning of what I was writing. If you read slow, you were . I should really have a beer or two in my system before I write these things, so I don't mess up.

The report is great. When you get done, you should submit it to some national magazines and get paid for it!!
