giving up re the new pier
That title is in keeping with the previous thread protesting the new pier for those who are interested in the more complete history of this issue. Given the age of that thread and the content of what Delmy heard today at a meeting between the mayor, Carlos Joaquin, and the AHRM (= main hotel association), it seemed a new thread would be in order.
The pier stays. That's a literal translation of what the mayor informed the association today. Delmy brought up the issue of the federal EPA order to destroy it, which was reported in the press near the beginning of the year (again see previous thread), in response to the main issue of the meeting, namely a plan for beach reclamation. She made the point that it didn't make much sense to talk about investing in such plans while a pier that everybody believes is working against beach reclamation and has been ordered destroyed remains in place. The mayor disputed that such an order had ever been issued and added that in any event, the conclusion had been reached that it would now cause more harm to the coral reefs in question to try to destroy it than leave it there in use, and that thus the plan was to allow it to operate but to be careful not to do damage to the reefs. (Thus proving rather remarkably how successful the strategy of "break the law now and pay for it later, if necessary" can be.) Apparently the announcement of this plan brought a round of guffaws and sarcastic comments under the breath, such as one to the effect that we might as well just destroy the reef altogether and stop worrying about it, or others more directly stating that such a plan would in fact be impossible. Delmy said someone told her afterward that she couldn't believe they'd just be allowed to do what they wanted despite the harm it would do, and that someone else was commenting that if it were damaging Xcaret or were right in front of the Royal Hideaway, maybe there would be some more political will against it among those in power. But such is not the case. A couple of days ago I saw 2 Ultramar ferries there and at least one was clearly in operation, as lots of people were moving about on the pier itself. Thank you for posting this and keeping us informed Steve! I had a feeling this type of thing would happen with the pier. Money talks even if the environment or smaller businesses will be damaged. And not only in Mexico even so it seems to be much easier to push through things like this there.

While in town in late August/early September, we were told that the ferries seen at that dock were carrying cruise ship passengers coming over from Coz - we saw boat/s the whole time (11 days) we were there except on Sunday, I believe. It kinda made sense since there's no place to actually buy tickets at this dock for a ride over to Coz... It's such a shame...cruise ships can't dock there because it's too shallow but we're still getting their passengers

I don't want to sound like a snob, but I guess I am. I don't like the cruise ship crowds. I know this is generalizing, but the hit and run aspects of a cruise ship tourist are not really the kind of business we need here. It only benefits cheap souvenier shops and name brand bars.

Last February there seemed to be a lot of tour buses waiting to load whenever there was a ferry at the North Pier. So I assumed it was a group coming over from the Cruise Ships. Never saw what seemed like any kind of Scheduled Passenger Service leaving from the North Pier.
