Comida Corrida and Other Edibles
Greetings all,
I read and re-read every thread under the Changarros y Mas and have learned a lot! HOWEVER, many of those posts are old and I was looking for some updated, current information. Maybe some of you foodies could help me out. I'll be staying at the Riviera Caribe Maya (10th Ave. & calle 30), at the north end of town. Are there any good places for Comida Corrida near there? I have no problem hoping in a cab for good food... but walking a great distance will be an issue as I have a herniated disk in my back (lovely!). Also, as I'm an avid Mapchick mapper... I see many new restaurants in the northern end of town, I'm curious if anyone has any comments on these: Tintos y Tapas Sushi Tlan Ole Taurino Uglia Maktub Cafe Sushi Ken El Artista La Hora Feliz Puro Bueno I haven't heard much about these, and since we'll be in Mexico, I know the Mayan food will be top-notch, but I never know about other ethnic foods. I'm most curious about the sushi, is it good? Also, I tend learn towards a vegetarian menu (and travelling with a hardcore veggie)... any good places with options other than pasta? I appreciate any thoughts! Tina |

The Yakemeshi is crab mixed with cream cheese (I think) and a hint of something spicy and topped over rice. Its $30 pesos for that and the sushi rolls were very fresh and delicious...they were also around $25 - $35 pesos. Each roll was 10 pieces. My second favorite sushi was at Kabuki on Calle 8.

The restaurant Maktub, on 5th avenue between Babe's 2 and Tintos y Tapas is WONDERFUL, especially for a vegetarian. They have typical Middle Eastern food like Hummus, Falafel, Babaganoush, etc. Very well-priced, too. Also, Babe's is always a good choice, since you can ask them to make nearly anything on their menu without meat.

You'll find all sorts of wonderful local food all along Av 30 between Constituyentes Av and Calle 30. One of my favorites is El Fogon. Another excellent place is La Bamba Jaroche. These are just a few of the wonderful local eateries that can be found along this stretch.

Food tastes better on the other side of Constituyentes, IMHO.
The best carnitas that I have found in PdC come from the back of a pickup truck near the entrance to Colosio. Big, huge meat-packed tacos for 8 pesos a pop. Every taxi driver and cop in Playa can be found there at least once a week. The guys parks on the side of the road between 30th and 35th on the street right before Gigante. |
